Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
I was invited to participate in the International Conference on Modeling Pest Distributions and Monitoring Strategies for Global Crop Protection, which was held in Taichung, Taiwan. This conference was organized by Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. I visited several MOA offices after the conference in Taichung.
Ministry of Agriculture, Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) was established in 1895 by the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan at the time of Japanese rule. After World War II in 1945, the institute came under the direct supervision of the Taiwan Provincial Administrative Office. In 1949, its affiliation was transferred to the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of the Taiwan Provincial Government, and in 1999 to the Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan, and in August 1, 2023 to the Ministry of Agriculture.
I visited TARI in Taichung and saw their massive insect collection. They have the largest collection in South Asia, and many institutes visit them to identify species. Dr. Lee is passionate about collecting and preserving native Taiwanese species, especially Coleoptera. He spends hours and hours in the woods to find native beetles.

I have been particularly interested in seeing Brahmaea wallichii. This species occurs only in the Ali Mountain area, and it is rare to see it. Climbing Ali Mountain (Alishan) is one of my bucket list, and there is a temple called Shouzhen Temple in Ali Mountain. From late March to early April, adult moth emerges and comes to this temple. And it is called "God Moth".
It is big! It is strange looking but beautiful. The first thing I asked Dr. Lee was that I wanted to see this moth. Unfortunately, he started cataloguing from Coleoptera (of course!) and hadn't gotten to Lepidoptera yet. He didn't know where it was....

The insect museum was established in 1909. The collection is impressive. The museum is open to public, but some specimens are only available for research.
