Follow General Pediatric Protocol.
Mandatory interventions:
a. Oxygen
b. Cardiac monitoring
c. IV access
d. Rapid glucose testing
Draw a blood sample to be tested at receiving facility prior to treatment, if possible.
In an awake patient you may consider offering a carbohydrate drink as your only treatment.
If HYPOGLYCEMIA (Blood sugar < 60 mg/dL) present:
a. Newborn up to 3 kg: administer DEXTROSE 10% 5 mL/kg IV. Mix by adding 12 mL saline to 3 mL dextrose 50% and then give 5, 10, or 15 mL.
b. Infants/children > 3 kg to 37 kg: administer DEXTROSE 10% 5 mL/kg IV. Mix by pulling 50 ml of saline out of a 250 ml bag and add 50 mL dextrose 50%.
If HYPERGLYCEMIA is present (blood sugar > 300) AND the patient has some or all of the following signs, initiate an IV bolus of 0.9% Isotonic Solution (NS or LR) 0.9% NORMAL SALINE at 20 mL/kg.
i. Rapid respirations
ii. Fruity odor to breath
iii. Warm, dry skin
iv. Nausea/vomiting
