Follow General Trauma Protocol.
Stop the burning process:
a. If THERMAL BURN, irrigate the involved area with water but be careful not to induce hypothermia.
b. If CHEMICAL BURN, brush chemical off of skin prior to water application. Be aware of the dangers of mixing water with certain dry chemical agents!
c. If ELECTRICAL BURN, see Electrocution/Lightning Injuries Protocol.
Cover involved area with dry, sterile burn sheets.
Remove & secure all clothing and jewelry from any involved extremities.
Determine body surface area (BSA) affected (see diagram next page).
Initiate Isotonic Solution (NS or LR) 0.9% NORMAL SALINE infusion at wide-open rate.
Note: Following an infusion formula (i.e. Parkland) is not necessary in the field. Fluids should be infused at the rate dictated by protocol. The total amount needed will be calculated at medical facility including the volume infused by EMS.
DO NOT apply gels, creams, ointments, or burn sprays.
Treat pain per Pain Management in Trauma Protocol.
“Rule of Nines”
Body surface area determination
* NOTE: The patient’s palm is equal to 1% BSA involved.
