Follow General Medical Protocol.
Mandatory interventions:
a. Cardiac monitoring
b. Oxygen
c. IV access
d. Rapid glucose testing
If HYPOGLYCEMIA [Blood sugar < 70] present:
a. ALERT: offer food/drink with high sugar content. You may also utilize a commercial glucose paste/gel.
b. NOT ALERT, administer:
i. 25 grams of Dextrose IV
If HYPERGLYCEMIA present with blood sugar > 300 AND the following signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) are present, initiate IV a Isotonic Solution at a wide-open rate.
i. Rapid respirations
ii. Fruity odor to breath
iii. Warm, dry skin
iv. Nausea/vomiting
DO NOT offer food/drink to any patient with an altered mental status.
