The prevention of the spread of infectious disease is a serious concern when caring for emergent patients. In an already “dirty” environment, it is of paramount importance to protect yourself, your partner, and your patient from preventable transmission of hazardous diseases. This can generally be affected by careful observation of your patient care practices. Good hand washing as frequently as possible is the single best method of disease transmission.
Use of gloves is mandatory when handling potentially infectious substances or materials. Items contaminated with bodily substances should be disposed of in approved containers provided in each medical facility. Non-disposable items should be carefully cleaned with an approved solution. Hazardous items such as needles should be placed in a “sharps” container for proper disposal.
Any situation in which a provider is exposed to a substance such as a needle stick, an EMS supervisor should be contacted regarding individual company policy regarding such exposures.
