Note: For the purposes of this section, a “pediatric” patient is considered to be 17 years of age or younger.
Obtain history of present illness and pertinent past history.
Obtain vital signs and repeat at regular intervals until arrival at medical facility.
a. Continuous oxygen saturation monitoring is considered a “vital sign”.
Perform a focused physical examination based on chief complaint but all pediatric patients should have:
a. Level of alertness
b. Lung sounds
c. Abdominal examination
d. Skin assessment
Cardiac monitoring should be instituted in pediatric patients with HR > 200 bpm OR history of heart disease.
Rapid glucose testing SHOULD be done on any patient with:
a. Altered mental status
b. History of diabetes or hypoglycemia
c. Unstable vital signs
Oxygen SHOULD ALWAYS be applied in the following circumstances:
a. Dyspnea or respiratory distress
b. Chest pain
c. Altered mental status
d. Unstable vital signs
e. Any other situation deemed appropriate by EMS personnel
