Class: Anti-hypoglycemic, carbohydrate
Action: Increases blood glucose concentrations
Indications: Documented hypoglycemia
Adverse Effects: Hyperglycemia, warmth, burning from IV infusion, tissue necrosis
Contraindications: Intracranial pressure, hypersensitivity, severe dehydration
Special Considerations: Pregnancy Class C
Dosages:
Adults:
12.5-25g of D50% IV/IO
250 ml of D10 IV/IO
Pediatrics:
0.5-1mg/kg of a 25% solution for >1 year old
Mixing:
Newborn up to 3 kg: administer DEXTROSE 10% 5 mL/kg IV. Mix by adding 12 mL saline to 3 mL dextrose 50% and then give 5, 10, or 15 mL.
Infants/children > 3 kg to 37 kg: administer DEXTROSE 25%
2 mL/kg IV. Mix 25 mL dextrose 50% with 25 mL saline.
OPTION: Infants/Children >3 kg to 37kg: administer Dextrose 10% 5mL/kg IV.
