Around the world, whaling has been banned since most whale species are under protection, but Inuit people in Greenland have special permission to continue the practice since it is both part of their culture and for sustenance. The argument for allowing whaling in this case is that the Greenlandic Inuit people were not responsible for the endangerment of whales, but rather those who industrialized whale hunting for economic benefits. Therefore, Inuit culture should not be limited by the poor ethical decisions of others1. Still, there are strict quotas and regulations that whalers must follow. There is an ongoing conflict with Greenland's government surrounding whaling since whale meat is being sold to tourists and other outsiders, which is not considered part of the sustenance argument. The Greenlandic government has stated that they should be able to sell whale to whoever they like as long as it is local, but others argue that it is commercializing the practice2.
