Bioswales

Defined by the National Association of City Transportation Officials, Bioswales are vegetated, shallow, landscaped depressions designed to capture, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff as it moves downstream. They are typically sized to treat the water quality event, also known as the “first flush,” which is the first and often most polluted volume of water resulting from a storm event. This could be beneficial in transportation areas in Montague that typically flood and later runoff to White Lake.

The areas highlighted in pink are the areas that would be ideal locations for bioswales. These areas are located on sloping or low lying land that could potentially get flooded and normally would cause overflow to run into nearby water.
