Policies for Agricultural Sector and Development of Rural Territories

2015-2018¹

Objectives:

Increase added value in agriculture, boosting productivity improvements and sustainable rural development, with growth rates between 6 and 8 percent in the period. To fulfill this objective it is required to achieve a significant increase in the sector’s budget and provide financial support required by the private sector; as well as the accompaniment of other sectors such as transport and infrastructure; Science, Technology and Telecommunications; Economy, Industry, Trade and Tourism; International Policy and others.

Support the national goal of reducing rural poverty through actions that improve living conditions in rural areas and foster the dignity of the rural population. A target to be achieved through joint efforts between various sectors, especially with labor and social security, human development and social inclusion, education, health, nutrition and sports, housing and human settlements, among others. Furthermore, right macroeconomic conditions are necessary in order for the sector's contribution to be effective at a national level.

State Policy for the Agri-Food Sector and Rural Development for Costa Rica 2010-2021²

Objectives:

Raising the level of competitiveness of the Costa Rican food sector, its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), exports, employment, productive investment, profitability and the income of producers through different programs and quality services that meet the demands of the productive sector.

Strengthen and integrate innovative and agro food activities in order to generate and transfer technology and create relations between the various relevant public and private entities.

Promote balanced development of rural areas and the rescue and improvement of family farming, which fosters proactive participation spaces and articulates with commercial channels, as well as improving rural economies and the sustainability of natural resources.

Promote inter sectoral efforts to prevent, mitigate and adapt to climate change processes and achieve management excellence of the agro-environment, which would enhance the sustainability of production processes, allow greater differentiation of the national export supply on world markets.
