Tree Planting

The root systems of trees help break up compact soil and assist surface water in infiltrating the urban soil. We found two specific tree species, Black Oak, and Red Maple, that are especially successful in this process. Studies show that they increase infiltration rates by 153%. If these trees were planted in areas subject to flooding, it would decrease the amount of flooding and help the flood pools infiltrate the surface back into the soils. If these trees were planted they would also take in carbon dioxide, so Montague could offset some of their carbon emissions by planting these trees. Additionally, they would provide a canopy and suck up pollutants in the soil of the urban area.
