Project based learning

(20th July, 2019)

Today, we have been talking about the essentials elements when developing PBL methodology:

1. Start with the essential questions: the problem or the change that the students must solve.

2. Plan your project design: think about what linguistic and content skills you want students to learn while working on the project.

3. Provide students your choices : students can make their own choices to develop the project.

4. Create a schedule: how long the project will las and set a deadline.

5. Asses the outcome: think about how will you asses students work. What are the skills you want to evaluate?

6. Find a wider audience: how students can share their products outside the class.

Once we have understood how to guide a project, we have been divided into groups to design a project for our students. We have chosen 3rd grade of primary and our topic was "Healthy habits".

At the end of the lesson, we had to make a brief presentation to the rest of the groups.

ending....

At 14:00h, lessons were finished so we had some to time to share our feelings and thoughts about the course and this experience abroad. After that, we received our course certificate.

It's been a wonderful time in Berlin!

Topography of Terror Documentation Center

To spend my last afternoon in Berlin I visited The institutions of Nazi terror where I could learn lots of things about this period.

Between 1933 and 1945, the central institutions of Nazi persecution and terror – the Secret State Police Office with its own “house prison,” the leadership of the SS and, during the Second World War, the Reich Security Main Office – were located on the present-day grounds of the “Topography of Terror” that are next to the Martin Gropius Building and close to Potsdamer Platz.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

It was Berlin’s best known crossing point between what was before 1990 communist East Berlin and the American-controlled sector of democratic West Berlin. In 1961, the East German government unexpectedly constructed a wall along its borders to restrict the flow of East Germans trying to permanently flee East Berlin.

Several checkpoints were erected, each laced heavily with barbed wire and carefully guarded by East German troops. They had instructions to shoot anyone trying to illegally cross over from East Berlin into West Berlin. More than 1,300 East Berliners died trying to escape via other means and locations along the wall.

APPS TO MAKE OUR STUDENTS LEARN IN A DIFFERENT WAY

(19th of July)

Here we can find some apps to make our students enjoy learning:

Mentimenter : app useful to create presentations or to give the students the opportunity to vote something during the lessons. It gives you a good report with the results and opinions of the students. It's also used to create word clouds.

Google expedition: to visit different places all over the world: museums, importante monuments, etc.

Students can watch videos about different things or places too.

Socrative: it's used to create tests. It's allows teacher to create multiple choice, true or false or short answer questions. It's gives you a very good feedback about students answers.

SIX THINKING HATS

(18th of July)

Using this methodology, people with different thinking styles discuss a problem, because every perspective is valid.

Each "Thinking Hat" is a different style of thinking. These are explained below:

  • White Hat: you look at the information that you have, analyze past trends, and see what you can learn from it.

  • Red Hat: you look at problems using your intuition, gut reaction, and emotion. Also, think how others could react emotionally.

  • Black Hat: using Black Hat thinking, look at a decision's potentially negative outcomes. Look at it cautiously and defensively.

  • Yellow Hat: this hat helps you to think positively. It is the optimistic viewpoint that helps you to see all the benefits of the decision and the value in it.

  • Green Hat: the Green Hat represents creativity. This is where you develop creative solutions to a problem.

  • Blue Hat: this hat represents process control.

BERLIN WALL

This afternoon, I have gone to the East Side Gallery to visit The Wall. There are still many sections and visible reminders of this famous political catastrophe. The Berlin wall is one of those events that shaped the city and the rest of the world. Separating the city from east and west, the citizens of each side lived very different lives. The splitting of Germany and Berlin happened after the Nazi’s lost World War II. The allies then split the conquered country amongst themselves. The allies would soon be in a war of their own leaving Germany and Berlin Split into two. The west side is controlled mainly by the United States and the United Kingdom. The east was then under control by the U.S.S.R. As things boiled over during the Cold War, a wall was constructed in Berlin to limit movement from East to West. This marked one of the first times in modern history governments had set up a physical barrier to separate like-minded civilians.

HOW TO MOTIVATE OUR STUDENTS...

(17th of July)

Today we have learnt some new apps that could be useful when teaching.

Padlet: similar to a website where you can add other relevant websites, videos, images, etc. Students can write their own comments in this virtual space.

Thinklink: after choosing funny picture you can add to it a huge variety of resources. It's quite motivating for children.

Coggle: used to create mindmaps. Similar to Cmaptools.

Kapwing: it's an app to edit videos online.

Screencast o matic: to record your own videos.

VISUAL THINKING STRATEGIES (VTS)

These are some its benefits:

  • Uses art to develop critical thinking, communication and visual literacy skills.

  • Increase observation skills, evidential reasoning and speculative abilities.

Children should be able to express their own opinions. There are no right or wrong answers, this strategy tries to encourage children to participate.

Teachers should ask these questions to their students after giving them a time to observe the picture:

  • What's going on in this picture?

  • What do you see that makes you say that?

  • What more can you find?

As teachers, we have visited the National Gallery of Berlin to practice Visual Thinking strategies with some pictures.

We have had a wonderful time and we have been able to speculate about the feelings and ideas that the painters wanted to show.

GAMES BASED LEARNING

(16th July)

BINGO: That's a good website to create your own cards to play with your students. It's an amazing game.

https://myfreebingocards.com/bingo-card-generator

KAHOOT: to quiz your students using a screen to show the questions and smartphones or computers to answer. At the end you are able to analyze their answers and give them a feedback.

PICKLERS: quite similar to Kahoot but you don't need to use mobile phones or computers.

WORDL CAFE METHOD

Method used to talk about an specific topic related to the contents.

First of all, you need to place five tables in a class. In each table a topic is going to be discuss and students should move from one table to the others. Teachers should choose interesting topics. There's a host in each table who is going to make sure that everyone is contributing to the topic (4 children per table/topic). You can swift the roles: coordinator, reader and secretary.

Finally, they have to write down their results.

FAUX FLIPPED CLASRRROOM

Taking into account that there're children who don't have internet at home you could give them some extra time at the beginning of the lessons to watch the videos and take notes before starting to work cooperatively. The aim of this method is to have more time at school to practice and solve problems.

CULTURE IN BERLÍN

During my second afternoon in Berlín I decided to come back to the island museum. There, I visited DDR Museum next to the river and opposite the Cathedral. It provides a unique visitor experience, making it one of Berlin’s most popular museums. Engage all of your senses to enjoy an immersive experience of everyday life in the former East Germany. It allows you to explore all aspects of daily life behind the Berlin Wall and the workings of state and Stasi.

Meeting new people...

Working together...

(15th of July)

At 7:00 am my alarm clock rang, I was too tired after a long day traveling but I wanted to start the lessons, so I woke up quickly and I took the public transport to go to the city centre.

Once I arrived to the academy, I met my seven classmates who are from different European countries such as: Poland, Ireland, England or Croatia. We had to show a power point presentation about our countries, cities and schools. It was really interesting to know about different schools and places!

During the morning we have developed quite useful activities to develop in our class and we have discovered some new games to learn playing.

1. Clock game: It's used to arrange meetings with your classmates to talk about a topic given.

2. Word cloud: using the website menti.com we have vote those words that are related to innovation.

¡¡¡Loving Berlin!!!

When I finished the lessons I had some free time to walk around the city so I decided to enroll myself into a tour to visit the Jewish Neighborhood and the Museum Island. I really love Berliner Dom, otherwise known as the Berlin Cathedral which is one of the most incredible buildings in this city.

After that, I visited Alexanderplatz which is a pleasant square in the middle of the city and is one of the most popular sights in Berlin.

LOADING ...

BERLIN EXPERIENCE !!! (14th of July)

After a hard day traveling I have just arrived to Berlín, a wonderful and magic city. I landed late on Sunday so I couldn't visit anything at all but I had some time to prepare everything for the first day. The previous week I was given a timetable which included all the activities we were doing during this week.

It's the first time our school applies for an Erasmus grant so we are really excited about it. I hope I 'm meeting interesting people from other countries to share as much as posible. I'm sure we are living great experiences while discovering this magic place.

I have chosen the course "Integrating innovation and creativity into teaching" an Europass Course that is taking place in the Carl Duisberg Centre located in the centre of Berlín. I am really interested in discovering new methods to motivate and encourage children to learn.

Let's enjoy this Erasmus trip!
