English Department Grad Path

English Courses

All English 11 course options will focus on developing student’s formal and analytical communication skills both in written and oral forms. Depending on the pathway, texts will vary from non-fiction and fiction pieces, to film and digital works. The course offerings are broken down into the following pathways: Composition, Creative Writing, English First Peoples, Literary Studies, and New Media. Within the pathways are specific content focuses for you to choose from. All course offerings require the same amount of academic rigour, and successful completion of one course is a prerequisite for English Studies 12. Students may take an additional course as an elective after completing one as a requirement. 

Composition: Composition 11 is designed to support students as they refine, clarify, and adjust their written communication through practice and revision. 

Composition 11: Basics

MCMPS11-4S-B Credits: 4 

This course focuses on the essential language skills students need to function in daily life and the workplace. This course is intended to help students develop the language competency fundamental to many opportunities in life, including continued learning, employment, and social interaction. Students will study a broad range of informational and literary works and practice using language in written, oral and visual forms for a variety of functions 

Creative Writing: Creative Writing 11 is designed for students who have an interest in creative expression through language. Within a supportive community of writers, students will collaborate and develop their skills through writing and design processes 

Creative Writing 11

MCTWR11-4S-I Credits: 4 

This course explores writing for a variety of purposes including analytical, academic, original fiction and non-fiction writing. Students will analyze mentor texts and use the writing process, including peer feedback, to improve writing strategies. 

English First Peoples (EFP)

English First Peoples (EFP)11: Literary Studies and New Media

Literary Studies: Literary Studies 11 allows students to delve more deeply into literature as they explore specific themes, periods, authors, or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of media. 

Literary Studies 11: Crime and Punishment

MLTST11-4S-CP Credits: 4 

In this course, students will explore the theme of crime and punishment in order to question criminals and acts worthy of punishment, the essential nature of mankind, personal and social morality, etc. Content warning: Students should be aware that some of the texts and media we will be discussing might contain graphic or frightening content. Please use your own discretion about whether this will be an appropriate course for you. 

Literary Studies 11: General Studies

MLTST11-4S-G Credits: 4 

This course will be presented as a generalized English 11 course with a variety of perspectives, topics, and texts. 

Literary Studies 11: Gothic Horror

MLTST11-4S-GH Credits: 4 

In this course, we will read writers from many different time periods, as we explore how the very earliest gothic works are still influencing horror writers today. Content warning: Students should be aware that some of the texts and media we will be discussing might contain graphic or frightening content. Please use your own discretion about whether this will be an appropriate course for you. 

Literary Studies 11: Science Ficiton

MLTST11-4S-SC Credits: 4 

This course will focus on reading and analyzing the science fiction genre. Students will focus on analyzing and interpreting novels, short stories, and films to come to a deeper understanding of the themes and messages in the science fiction genre. If you enjoy Star Wars, Star Trek, Phillip K. Dick, etc., then this is the class for you. Classroom evaluation will be based on writing, analyses, interpretations, and creative representations of learning. This course will give you the foundations and skills to prepare you for English 12. 

Literary Studies 11: Theatre

MLTST11-4S-T Credits: 4

This course is a survey of drama, from Greek plays, to Shakespeare, to 20th Century theatre. There will be a focus of societal commentary through dramatic works.

Literary Studies 11: Historical Literature

MEN11-4S-HF Credits: 4

Do you like history? Do you ever wish you could go back in time? Historical literature both enables us to understand and empathize with those who lived in the past but it also impacts and shapes our understanding of what happened. In this course, we will look at historical literature in a variety of forms and will investigate the relationship between history and story

Literary Studies 11: Pre-AP

MLTST11-4S-PA Credits: 4 

This course is intended for students who wish to pursue AP English studies in their grade 12 year, and is designed to begin preparing students for academic college/ university studies. We will look at a variety of texts, from the 16th century to modern day, developing an appreciation for the role that literature plays in understanding ourselves and others as hum 

New Media: New Media 11 is a program of studies designed to reflect the changing role of technology in today’s society and the increasing importance of digital media in communicating and exchanging ideas. 

New Media 11: Journalism

MNMD-11-4S-J Credits: 4 

This course is for students with a keen interest in current events. Students will contribute to the RSS online newspaper, and will participate in all facets of the digital production as they move towards mastery in writing.
