Any of the courses listed below can be used as your PE 10 credit. One additional course may be taken as an elective.

Mixed Martial Arts Intro 10

MPHED10-4S-MA Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None This course has been developed to introduce students to mixed martial arts and a practical system of personal self-defence. This course is broken down into 4 areas of study: Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, and weight training. Along with developing life skills, MMA Intro will improve your cardiovascular fitness and muscular fitness. 

Outdoor Education 10

MPHED10-4S-O Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

This program is for students who like to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Activities include: hiking, snowshoeing, rock climbing, backpacking, camping and other related activities. Students will learn outdoor survival skills and navigation principles such as GPS and compass skills. There will be multi-day trips offered as well. 

Physical and Health Education (PE) 10

MPHED10-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None

This course is based upon two primary focuses. The first focus is that of physical literacy movements in a variety of environments with major themes including fair play and social responsibility. The second focus will be on healthy and active living, getting students to consider potential barriers, as well as, options to maintain an active lifestyle. A variety of minor games, traditional games and field trips will make up the majority of the class. 

Dance 10

MPHED10-4S-D Credits: 4

 Prerequisite: None 

This course is designed to build the skills and attitudes necessary for a healthy and active lifestyle through a combination of fitness, dance and performance. Students will increase their fitness and strength while learning training techniques and principles that will help them remain active throughout their lifetime. In addition, students will develop skills in a variety of dance styles that will culminate in full dance pieces to be performed for an audience at the semester-end show. Students will also learn strategies to manage mental health and build healthy relationships. Dance 10 will be a continuation of the skills covered in Dance 9. It is recommended, but not required, that students complete Dance 9 prior to enrolling in Dance 10. 

Physical and Health Education 10 (Basketball & Training)

MPHED10-4S-BB Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

This course is designed to develop basketball skills while maintaining overall physical literacy. As much as 50% of the class will be dedicated to fitness and regular PE activities. The basketball portion will include ball handling, shooting and playing a variety of games ( 3 vs 3, 4 vs 4, etc…..). 

Football 10

MPHED10-4S-FB Credits: 4

 Prerequisite: None

Football Intro is an introduction to the games of Canadian and American football including football theory, techniques and training both in and off season.  Students will learn the rules of the Canadian and American games (with an emphasis on the high school levels) as well as offensive, defensive and special team strategies.  Students will learn how to use personal equipment and be instructed in a safe use of that equipment during technical drills.  Students will participate in contact and non-contact drills and scrimmages.  In addition to theory, students will learn proper technique for blocking, tackling, throwing, catching and kicking.  Practice of both individual and team skills will be incorporated into lessons. 

Women's Basketball

MACLV11-4S-WB Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

A course that focuses on the skill and mental development in basketball. At the center of the course will be decision making in the flow of the game and working on basketball instincts. There will also be a component on building knowledge of the game and linking that to different offence and defensive strategies. At the heart of the course will be a fostering of the love and fun of the game of basketball and long term goals of activity and fitness for personal health. 

High Performance Program

For grades 9-12 with Placement by Application

The High Performance program provides elite level athletes and performers with a flexible, innovative school program to enhance academic achievement. This option provides structured support for students who are involved in high level (provincial or national level) organized extra-curricular sports or performances that result in frequent absences from school. Students choosing this option must complete an application, attend an interview, and provide recommendations from a coach or instructor. Successful applicants will show a proven commitment to their studies, solid work ethic, willingness and the ability to work independently. 

Volleyball and Training 10

For grades 9-12 with Placement by Application

Prerequisite: None This course is designed to advance volleyball skills while continuing to develop physical literacy. As much as 50% of the class will be dedicated to fitness and regular PE activities. The volleyball portion will include skill development, drills, and running various game scenarios. 


Rugby 10

MPHED10-4S-RB    Credits 4

Rugby 10 will help students to develop rugby skills, sense, and strategies.  Skills will include learning how to pass, kick, catch, ruck, tackle, maul, scrum, and perform lineouts in various game situations and at game speed.  Students will learn about and participate in fitness training, nutrition analysis, and mental preparation necessary to be successful in Rugby.  Also, students will have the opportunity to get their basic first aid certification and to learn about taping basic athletic injuries. Please note that rugby is a contact sport and students will be expected to participate in controlled contact drills, and once deemed competent and safe, in full contact scrimmages.  This course is open to beginners and all genders.
