American Sign Language: American Sign Language is a visual language, which combines formal signs, finger spelling, gestures, body language, and facial expression. The learning environment in the classroom is fun, fast-paced, and highly interactive. Students will have a variety of experiences and opportunities to use ASL, including the opportunity to communicate with children and adults who are deaf and hard of hearing. An important part of the ASL program at RSS is community outreach; students will engage in a number of fieldtrips to various schools in the district to share their knowledge of ASL and build awareness about the Deaf Community.

Introductory American Sign Language 11

American Sign Language is a visual language which combines formal signs, fingerspelling, gestures, body language, and facial expression. The learning environment in the classroom is fun, fast paced, and highly interactive – all without using voice! ASL students are given opportunities to explore ASL, including opportunities to communicate with members of the Deaf Community. ASL is a challenging and demanding course. Strong work habits, regular attendance and full participation in class activities are essential in order to fulfill the course requirements.


French 10

MFR—10-4S Credits: 4

French 10 is a communicative course intended to have students focus primarily on speaking, listening, comprehension, and grammar skills. On many occasions the students will work in pairs or small groups, on topics drawn from the experiences of young people between the age of 13 and 16. Cultural material drawn from authentic French language sources, such as magazines and brochures are included. This course is based on the communicative series Bon Voyage. (Level 2 Part one)

German 10

MGE—10-4S Credits: 4

The object of this course is to provide an opportunity for the student to begin the study of German as a second language. By completing this study, the student will obtain a working vocabulary and a necessary understanding of the grammatical structure to be able to read, write, understand and speak basic conversational German. Students will learn to appreciate German culture within the content of this language. This course is designed for those students who have no German language background.

Japanese 10

MJA—10-4S Credits: 4

Students will learn basic Japanese conversation including, greetings, self-introduction, and family introduction. The course uses 'real' Japanese resources such as children's picture books, anime, manga, and toys. We will learn about basic concepts of Japanese culture and society. Students will master the hiragana and katakana writing systems and be introduced to some kanji.

Spanish 10

MSP—10-4S Credits: 4

This course is for anyone who wants to communicate in and understand basic Spanish! This course is based on story-telling and emphasizes the use of common, high-frequency vocabulary and expressions. During class, students will participate in activities that challenge their comprehension and skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will focus on communication in the past, present, and future. In addition to communication, students will be exposed to Hispanic culture and cultural activities. These lessons will provide students the opportunity to practice cultural awareness and appreciation. This language course requires students to attend class, participate, and practice! Spanish 10 is a prerequisite for Spanish 11 or it can stand alone as a comprehensive introduction to the language.

Punjabi Intro

MPUN-10-4S Credits: 4

Introduction to Punjabi is a beginner course in Punjabi. Students will learn the alphabet, vowel symbols, basic grammar skills, and basic reading skills. Students will learn how to use common expressions and vocabulary for familiar objects. There will be a number of major projects to extend their knowledge of the Punjabi language, culture, and history. Students are expected to work hard in order to be successful in this course.
