Do you want to make your days at RSS fun and exciting for you and all of your friends? If yes, then this is the course for you! Students in this course are expected to be actively involved in organizing and running school events and activities and/or supporting recreation and sporting events. Leadership is intended to be student driven – self motivation and independence is a must. Students will have input and offer new ideas to create school spirit. This class is a “get up and go do it” group that has the potential to create a very vibrant school environment. Students in the program will be expected to do some volunteer hours outside of class time. Some events that Leadership run include the Terry Fox Run, Hunger Games, Pep Rallies, Spirit Weeks, Intramurals, 12 Days of Giving, and many more. New event ideas and activities welcome!

Peer Mentorship 11 & 12

Prerequisite: Application required

Peer Mentors are intended to do some of the most important work in the school. Their aim is to develop friendships with Grade 9’s and 10’s and any new International students to make the transition to RSS an easy and positive experience. Peer Mentors will work one on one with these students during their assigned block in the Peer/Counselling Centre. To equip Peer Mentors for this role, they are taught interpersonal communication and conflict resolution. Applicants should be outstanding citizens with a great work ethic and should have the ‘courage to be kind’ in all situations. In order to help others students must be “well” themselves. Due to limited space in the program, an application to this course with references will be required.

Wellness Leadership 11 & 12

Are you someone who wants to see change around mental health within our school community? Then, come join the all new Wellness Leadership program at RSS! Students in the RSS Wellness Leadership course will raise awareness about mental health, work to reduce stigma and to educate others about the supports available to students in the school and community. This course is aimed at students who are interested in working in a leadership role with people in varying grade levels, by planning activities, and raising awareness around mental health issues in the school. Students in this course will:

• Be trained to become Red Cross “Beyond the Hurt” Youth Facilitators and will lead workshops in the middle schools around anti-bullying

• Will plan and promote events around Wellness Week, including the Wellness Assembly

• Implement Wellness initiatives in the school community

• Gain skills in event planning, leadership, and public speaking
