PE 11 & 12

Any of the courses listed below can be used as your PE 10 credit. One additional course may be taken as an elective.

Mixed Martial Arts 11

YLRA-1E-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: PE 10 and Teacher recommendation or MMA Intro preferred 

This course continues to develop students mixed martial arts ability as a practical system of personal self-defence. This course is broken down into 4 areas of study: Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, and weight training. Along with developing life skills, MMA 11 will improve your cardiovascular fitness and muscular fitness. 

Mixed Martial Arts 12

YLRA-2E-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: MMA11, PE10, PE11 

This course continues to develop students mixed martial arts ability as a practical system of personal self-defence. This course is broken down into 4 areas of study: Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, and weight training. Along with developing life skills, MMA12 offers the opportunity to earn another belt if the student completed MMA11. 

Outdoor Education 11 and 12

MODED11-4S / MODED12-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

This program is structured for students that wish to emphasize the “outdoor” component of physical education. Activities include backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, x-country skiing, snowshoeing, camping and other activities pertaining to the outdoors. Some of these activities are structured into multiday trips, which are optional. 

Active Living 11: Lifetime Sports (PE 11)

MACLV11-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: PE 10 or a previous Physical Education equivalent 

Active Living 11/12 is a dynamic course fostering a lifelong health commitment. Students engage in a variety of physical activities and games to enhance fitness. The curriculum includes sports, recreation, and outdoor experiences to develop skills and teamwork. Encouraging a lasting commitment to physical activity, the course emphasizes ongoing self-assessment through games and fitness. Students in this course will also go on a variety of field studies to help support connections to the community through physical fitness. There will be a course fee attached to help facilitate the cost of these field trips. Active Living 11/12 instills personal and social responsibility and promotes goal-setting to help sustain lifelong healthy habits.

Basketball and Training 11

MACLV11-4S-BB Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: PE 10: Basketball & Training 

This course will focus on individual skill development and basketball specific fitness exercises. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals such as ball handling, shooting, defense, and court awareness. Workouts will be geared towards pre-season, inseason and post-season. Knowledge of basketball specific training and basketball methodology, along with the role that basketball can play in maintaining a healthy lifestyle completes the course. 

Basketball and Training 12

MACLV11-4S-BB Credits: 4

 Prerequisite: PE 10: Basketball & Training

 This course will focus on individual skill development and basketball specific fitness exercises. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals such as ball handling, shooting, defense, and court awareness. Workouts will be geared towards pre-season, in-season and post-season. Knowledge of basketball specific training and basketball methodology, along with the role that basketball can play in maintaining a healthy lifestyle completes the course. 


Football 11

YLRA-1F-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

Football 11 is an continuation of the games of Canadian and American football including football theory, techniques and training both in and off season.  Students will learn the rules of the Canadian and American games (with an emphasis on the high school levels) as well as offensive, defensive and special team strategies.  Students will learn how to use personal equipment and be instructed in a safe use of that equipment during technical drills.  Students will participate in contact and non-contact drills and scrimmages.  In addition to theory, students will learn proper technique for blocking, tackling, throwing, catching and kicking.  Practice of both individual and team skills will be incorporated into lessons. 

Football 12

YLRA-2F-4S            Credits: 4

Prerequisite: None

Football 12 is a place to further your athletic ability, strength and conditioning, as well as football understanding. Position-specific strategies will allow students to extend their individual focus. We will make use of the dome, weight room, and film analysis. All facilities and equipment will be provided by the school except for cleats. Previous football experience is an asset but is not necessary.  

Women's Basketball

MACLV11-4S-WB Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

A course that focuses on the skill and mental development in basketball. At the center of the course will be decision making in the flow of the game and working on basketball instincts. There will also be a component on building knowledge of the game and linking that to different offence and defensive strategies. At the heart of the course will be a fostering of the love and fun of the game of basketball and long term goals of activity and fitness for personal health. 

Women's Fitness and Recreational Activities

MACLV11-4S-WF / MACLV12-4S-WF  Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None

This course is designed for females who want to improve their physical fitness and remain physically active in an all girls environment. Class activities will split between a fitness component and a games/recreational activity component.  Students will be asked to explore a variety of activiites and student choice/preference will play a large role in what the class looks like. Activities can range from individual activities (yoga, circuit training, badminton) to team activities (volleyball, badminton, PE minor games). Students will engage in a variety of workouts to learn how to stay physically active for life.  The class will also include a variety of field trips chosen by the students based on interest (bowling, hiking, YMCA). 

Fitness and Conditioning 11

MFTCD11-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

This program is structured for students/athletes that wish to pursue the fitness, weight training, and conditioning component of physical education. The focus will be on sport/ activity specific training and various training methods that will contribute to overall physical and mental development while acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enhance quality of life and develop the methods of fitness instruction. 

Fitness and Conditioning 12

MFTCD12-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

This program is structured for students /athletes that wish to pursue the fitness, weight training and conditioning component of physical education. The focus will be on sport/ activity specific training and various training methods that will contribute to overall physical and mental development while acquiring the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enhance quality of life as well as exposure to a rapidly increasing career field. Human Performance 11 is not required. 

Rugby 11

MACLV11-4S-R Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: Rugby 10

Rugby 11 will build upon Rugby 10 and will help students to continue to develop rugby skills, sense, and strategies.  Skills will include learning how to pass, kick, catch, ruck, tackle, maul, scrum, and perform lineouts in various game situations and at game speed.  Students will learn about and participate in fitness training, nutrition analysis, and mental preparation necessary to be successful in Rugby.  Grade 11 students will be expected to design and coach at least two unique drills throughout the course. Also, students will have the opportunity to get their Rugby Referee Certification. Please note that rugby is a contact sport and students will be expected to participate in controlled contact drills, and once deemed competent and safe, in full contact scrimmages. This course is open to beginners and all genders

Rugby 12

MACLV12-4S-R Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: Rugby 11 

Rugby 12 will build upon Rugby 11 and will help students to continue to develop rugby skills, sense, and strategies.  Skills will include learning how to pass, kick, catch, ruck, tackle, maul, scrum, and perform lineouts in various game situations and at game speed.  Students will learn about and participate in fitness training, nutrition analysis, and mental preparation necessary to be successful in Rugby.  Grade 12 students will be expected to work in a group to design and coach at least one full practice throughout the course. Also, students will have the opportunity to get their Rugby Referee Certification and/or Level 1 Rugby Coaching Certification. Please note that rugby is a contact sport and students will be expected to participate in controlled contact drills, and once deemed competent and safe, in full contact scrimmages. This course is open to beginners and all genders.

High Performance Program

For grades 9-12 with Placement by Application

The High Performance program provides elite level athletes and performers with a flexible, innovative school program to enhance academic achievement. This option provides structured support for students who are involved in high level (provincial or national level) organized extra-curricular sports or performances that result in frequent absences from school. Students choosing this option must complete an application, attend an interview, and provide recommendations from a coach or instructor. Successful applicants will show a proven commitment to their studies, solid work ethic, willingness and the ability to work independently. 

Volleyball and Training 11

MPHED11-4S-VB         Credits: 4

Prerequisite: Volleyball and Training 10

This course will focus on individual skill development and volleyball specific fitness. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals such as serving, ball-handling, rotation, and defensive positioning. The philosophy of this program will be built off of the Long Term Athlete Development Model used by Volleyball Canada. We will strive for excellence while supporting the development of physical literacy and empowering people to be active for life.


Volleyball and Training 12

This course will focus on individual skill development and volleyball specific fitness. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals such as serving, ball-handling, rotation, and defensive positioning. We will strive for excellence while supporting the development of physical literacy and empowering people to be active for life.
