American Sign Language: American Sign Language is a visual language, which combines formal signs, finger spelling, gestures, body language, and facial expression. The learning environment in the classroom is fun, fast-paced, and highly interactive. Students will have a variety of experiences and opportunities to use ASL, including the opportunity to communicate with children and adults who are deaf and hard of hearing. An important part of the ASL program at RSS is community outreach; students will engage in a number of fieldtrips to various schools in the district to share their knowledge of ASL and build awareness about the Deaf Community.

American Sign Language 11

MASL-11-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: Introductory American Sign Language 11

ASL 11 expands on expressive and receptive skills, vocabulary, and experiences of Introductory ASL 11. Students will be encouraged to use ASL in real life situations, to research topics related to ASL, and become familiar with art and literature of Deaf Culture, as it relates to learning ASL. ASL 11 is a visually demanding course which requires continued commitment, strong work ethic, and consistently good attendance. ASL 11 will satisfy the second language requirement for many universities. It is recommended to take ASL 12 to satisfy certain degree programs.


American Sign Language 12

Prerequisite: ASL 11

ASL 12 connects ASL language skills with real life situations, further exploring Deaf Culture within the local Deaf Community. Increased language proficiency will allow students to gain deeper social and personal awareness skills through the lens of a global citizen and ally. Through inquiry, students will explore creative works that will promote connections between language and culture.



French 11

MFR—11-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: French 10

French 11 students will concentrate on improving their listening, speaking, and comprehension skills. The main objective is to be capable of communicating verbally. The students are expected to exchange opinions on topics of interest; describe or narrate an event, situation, or experience; discuss plans related to common activities; interact in French with confidence in familiar situations drawn from real life; research and use relevant information from a variety of sources to complete a task; view, listen to, and read creative works and respond to them in various ways, and be familiar with cultural traditions and customs. This course is based on the communicative series Bon Voyage (Level 2 Part 2).

French 12

MFR—12-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: French 11

This course will be taught primarily in French. In French 12, students will increase their vocabulary and grammatical skills by studying the next level in the series Bon Voyage and by participating in a variety of classroom activities. Students are expected to use vocabulary in the present, past, compound and future tenses as well as be able to demonstrate the proper use of the subjunctive mood; research, analyze, and use information; view, listen to and read creative works and respond to them through various media; continue to be enriched in the francophone culture. Students will be required to write short essays and opinion paragraphs.

German 11

MGE—11-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: German Intro

This course is designed to further develop the conversational skills of German Intro. While much emphasis is placed on reading, comprehension, and grammatical skills, the main focus is the conversational communication of the students. Pupils are exposed to a wide variety of speaking experiences and oral dramatizations. A written midterm is complemented by an oral final exam. German 11 fulfills the language requirements of most universities.

German 12

MGE—12-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: German 11

This course is designed to promote further development of translation, composition, and conversational skills and is intended for students who have achieved a good understanding of German. German 12 aims at academically senior students who must write a provincial and possibly a scholarship examination. This is definitely not for the faint of heart. An A or B standing in German 11 is a recommended prerequisite.

Japanese 11

MJA—11-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: Japanese 10

Building on language skills developed in Japanese 10, students will expand their vocabulary and become confident in exchanging information on familiar topics. Students will convey acquired information in oral and visual forms, and in writing using hiragana, katakana and some kanji.

Japanese 12

MJA—12-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: Japanese 11

Students' language (writing, reading, speaking, and listening) will become more detailed as they exchange information on familiar topics, express plans, give information, and support points of view on various topics using hiragana, katakana, and kanji.

Spanish 11

MSP—11-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: Spanish 10

Spanish 11 is for anyone who wants to expand their comprehension and skills in Spanish and/or apply to a post-secondary institution with a Language 11 course credit. In this course, the story-telling continues with new stories using increasingly complex vocabulary and expressions. During class, students will participate in activities that challenge their comprehension and skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will focus on communication in the past, present, and future. In addition to communication, students will be exposed to Hispanic culture and cultural activities. These lessons will provide students the opportunity to practice cultural awareness, appreciation, and discuss the ethics of cultural appropriation. This language course requires students to attend class, participate, and practice!

Spanish 12

Prerequisite: Spanish 11

This course is for anyone who wants to expand their comprehension and skills in Spanish for travel or post-secondary language study. In this course, the story-telling continues with new stories using increasingly complex vocabulary and expressions. During class, students will participate in activities that challenge their comprehension and skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will focus on communication in the past, present, and future and they will learn to use the language in various real-life and travel scenarios. In addition to communication, students will be exposed to Hispanic culture and cultural activities. These lessons will provide students the opportunity to practice cultural awareness, appreciation, and discuss the ethics of cultural appropriation. This language course requires students to attend class, participate, practice, and challenge themselves!

Punjabi- Advanced (11/12)

MPUN-11-4S Credits: 4

Prerequisite: Intro Punjabi

Punjabi Advanced will continue to build on language skills developed in Punjabi Intro. Students will expand their vocabulary, reading, and writing skills. Students will learn how to use common expressions and vocabulary for familiar objects. There will be a number of major projects to extend their knowledge of the Punjabi language, culture, and history. Students are expected to work hard in order to be successful in this course.
