Studio Art: Drawing and Painting Foundations 11

MVAD-11-4S Credits: 4 Prerequisite: Art Foundations 10 This studio art course is designed for students to learn and use foundational - and advanced - art skills and creative design strategies in a studio setting. Students are encouraged to work with and explore a variety of 2D and 3D media with greater independence. Students will develop a personal portfolio of art. Suggested projects include: drawing (pencil, color pencil, charcoal, pastels, ink), painting (watercolour, acrylic), mixed media, design thinking (fashion, characters, architecture), and digital art. Basic supplies required: sketchbook, drawing pencils, eraser, ruler, and tortillon. 

Studio Glass 11

YVPA-1C-4S Credits: 4 Prerequisite: None Students will be introduced to glass in several different forms and many techniques in glass manipulation. Students will learn about the history of glass and the many uses it has had in art and daily life over the last two thousand years. After understanding the safe way to handle glass and glass equipment, students will work through various projects each introducing a new technique. 

Studio Art: Drawing and Painting Advanced 12

Prerequisite: Studio Art 11

 Drawing and Painting Intro or teacher permission This studio art course is for students to develop advanced, personal creative art and design skills. Students are encouraged to work in a more self-directed approach in a studio setting with emphasis on individual expression. Students will complete visual experiments culminating in a final exhibition. Suggested projects include: drawing (pencil, color pencil, charcoal, pastels, ink), painting (watercolour, acrylic), mixed media,, design thinking (fashion, characters, architecture), and digital art. Students will also develop a portfolio of artwork that could be used for admission to postsecondary programs. Basic supplies required: sketchbook, drawing pencils, eraser, ruler, and tortillon. 

Printmaking and Graphic Design Foundations 11

MVAGA11   Credits: 4

This studio art course is for students to learn various printmaking techniques and graphic design concepts through hands-on art projects. Students will solve creative design challenges using the principles of design. Suggested design projects include character design, skateboard graphics, product marketing, and bookbinding. Students will also try a number of old-school printmaking techniques such as lino-cut printing, Japanese woodcuts, and graffiti stencils. Students will work in a studio environment to develop a personal portfolio of artwork that could be used for admission to post-secondary programs.



Printmaking and Graphic Design Advanced 12

Prerequisite: Printmaking and Graphic Design Foundations 11

Explore the world of digital art! Media Arts 12 is an exploration of digital art making and creativity. Digital tools are an important part of any artist’s toolbox! In Media Arts 12, you get to create and express using a variety of media including: digital drawing and painting, Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud, and some video art and graphic design as well. Work with digital tools and ideas that are interesting to you and build a personal portfolio of expressive digital artwork

Studio Art: Ceramics and Sculpture Foundations 11

MVAC-11-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: None 

This course will enable students to develop skills in image development, context, and elements and principles of design in the area of Ceramics and Sculpture. Projects and media may include: ceramics (clay, glazes, stains), sculpture (wood, plastic, cardboard, wire, concrete stepping stones, papiermâché, etc.), recycled objects, and glasswork. Students are encouraged to work with greater independence in a studio setting and will learn new techniques and skills in handling a range of tools and equipment necessary to create their projects. Photos of student work may be submitted into grad portfolios. 

Studio Art: Ceramics and Sculpture Advanced 12

MVAC-12-4S Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: SA: Ceramics and Sculpture Foundations or permission from teacher. 

This course will continue to develop skills learned in Studio Art: CS Foundations. 

Studio Art 12 AP: Drawing or 2D Design Advanced Placement

A2DP-12 Credits: 4 

Prerequisite: Any of: Studio Art: P/G or D/P class and teacher permission 

This course is designed for motivated senior art students to make visual art that personally interests them. Students will develop a series of artwork related to a personal inquiry question, then submit their art portfolio to AP College Board for final examination. Students focus on one of two portfolio types: Drawing or 2D Design. All forms of 2-dimensional visual art are acceptable, from traditional drawing and painting to digital media, animation, photography, collage, illustration, character design and mixed media. Successful students are typically able to work independently, refine and improve their art and ideas, and meet deadlines. 

Indigenous Visual Arts 

VIHW-12 Credits: 4 

Students will explore and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of our Indigenous Peoples through visual art.  This is a hands on art course where students learn and improve their drawing, painting and sculpting skills all while learning about Indigenous history, Indigenous culture and Indigenous artists.  This course begins with traditional and modern Syilx visual culture and artists, then expands the learning through many nations across Turtle Island.    Students can take this course multiple times, each time with new experiences and adaptations.

This course welcomes all students in grade 10, 11 and 12.
