The Biomedical Science Program of Study focuses on the study of biology and medicine in order to introduce students to the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the healthcare field, such as researching and diagnosing diseases, pre-existing conditions, or other determinants of health. Students may also practice patient care and communication.
Recommended Course Sequence:
Principles of Biomedical Science || GHS, RHS, VHS & VRHS
Human Body Systems || GHS, RHS, VHS & VRHS
Medical Interventions || GHS, RHS, VHS & VRHS
Scientific Research and Design: Biomedical Science || GHS, RHS, VHS & VRHS
Work-Based Learning opportunities may include:
Internship - gain experience by interning with a research laboratory (university, pharmaceutical, biotechnology company, public health)
Job Shadow - spend a day or more observing professionals such as a doctor, nurse, PA, clinical laboratory assistant, physical or occupational therapist, or veterinary clinic assistant
Industry Project - assist a medical device/biomedical engineering company with product development or quality assurance control
Competitions - while not direct work experiences, participating in HOSA competitions can involve development of practical skills and simulated real-world scenarios; consider conducting biomedical-focused research and competing in science fairs
Field Trips and Guest Speakers - gain understanding of a variety of career paths and insight into the industry from professionals
While most of these course opportunities don't apply to Program of Study completion, some may. Students are advised to consider them to strengthen preparation.
