The Roman Army
Roman Legion
Roman soldiers were grouped in legions (4,200 men)
They could travel 20 miles a day while wearing armor (walking, running, even swimming in their gear)
They crossed rivers in boats and built bridges to gain access to lands and enemies
Property owning citizens (men only) were the only people allowed to join the army and they had to bring their own equipment (helmet, sword, shield, etc.)
The consul Marius had no recruits and he allowed poor men (non landowning) to volunteer for the Roman Army (equipment and pay was given to soldiers)
Equipment
Roman soldiers wore armor as protection
Roman armor consisted of a helmet, breastplate (torso protection), belt, footwear, leg guards, and shield
Other equipment: water canteen & satchel
Roman weapons: Pilum (Javelin), gladius (sword), and pugio (dagger)
When the poor were allowed to join the army the government supplied soldiers with a bronze helmet, mail armor, short sword, javelin, and an oval shield
Roman soldiers were professional warriors (meaning that was their job; they got paid)
Roman Tents
Tents were important in the Roman Army
These temporary shelters provided a place to sleep and rest before battle
While roman soldiers were tough, they would build strong friendships and loyalty when sharing tents, duties, and meals
Military Training
Training made Roman soldiers very strong and tough
They exercised, trained with weapons, and learned military strategy
They continued their exercises throughout
Part of their duties were building fortified camps with deep ditches and high walls (the walls were called palisades)
They even built straight roads and strong bridges to carry its men to battle
