Egyptian Agriculture
Agriculture
5,000 years ago, Egyptians lived on farms and raised livestock (domesticated animals)
They grew wheat, barley, beans, peas, onions, grapes, figs, and watermelons
Everyone ate well, even the poor
Preparing the Fields
Farmers would wait for the flooded river to recede
They plowed the soil and scattered the seeds
They used domesticated animals to trample the scattered seeds into the soil
Farmers would create channels from lakes and the Nile River to transport water to irrigate their crops
Early Farm Tools
Early Egyptian farmers used different tools
They had hoes, rakes, and sickles
They also had the Shaduf (a large bucket scoop attached to a pole to gather water)
Clothing
Early Egyptians harvested flax to make cloth
They made linen (cloth material made from flax) clothing
Linen kept them cool in hot weather
