Life in Rome (the main city) was very hot in the summer
Rich Romans left for their country villas in the summer to escape the heat and get cool fresh air
Roman villas had large main doors for guests to come in
Slaves kept the villas looking clean (they also cooked and served)
Roman Villa Courtyard
Roman guests walked in to the courtyard of the villa as they entered the main doors
The courtyard was the main living area for relaxing and entertainment
The courtyard had elaborate statues, fountains, and portraits
Villa Rooms
Roman villas had many rooms
The rooms could be for eating, working, or sleeping
The rooms were big with high ceilings
luxurious furniture adorned the rooms (spaced out and uncluttered)
Roman Mosaics
Roman villas had floors and walls decorated with mosaics
Mosaics were expensive
They were very detailed
A mosaic was made up of small square/cube tiles
The tiles were put together to make an image or scene
Frescoes
Roman artists learned the art of frescoes from the Greeks
Frescoes are paintings created while the plaster of the wall is still fresh
Wealthy Romans had many of these frescoes throughout their country villas
Great Greek artists were hired by rich Romans for fresco paintings
Roman frescoes showed landscapes, battles, or everyday life scenes
Frescoes of the Roman wealthy family was common
