The Greeks gave them their name (Phoenicians) because in Greek it meant "Purple Dye People"
Phoenicians created purple dye from sea shells and traded throughout the MediterraneanÂ
They lived in what is today Lebanon on the eastern part of the Mediterranean
The most popular city-states in the Phoenician territory were Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos. Tyre was one of the most powerful of all
The Phoenician Alphabet
The Phoenicians had a 22 letters alphabet that they adopted from the Sumerian Cuneiform
The Phoenician alphabet was their greatest contribution to future civilizations
They used this alphabet to keep records of trades and other important data
Phoenician Trade
Phoenicians were excellent ship builders, sailors, and traders
They spread their culture and ideas through cultural diffusion (exchange of ideas)
The Phoenicians traded for materials to make goods, like pots or jewelry
They sailed far and wide (some estimates place them as far as the Atlantic Ocean)

The Phoenicians were good ship builders
Their ships were large (for the times)
The ships had large sails to travel far and wide
Their ships would travel to many destinations (miles and miles away from their home)

The Phoenician Military was weak
They were sailors and traders
They were not warriors
