Greek Colonization And Trade
New Settlements
As Greek city-states began to grow in population, demands for food grew
The Greek city-stats were hot and dry with very little good farmland available
Between 750-550 B.C. Greeks fought amongst themselves for limited resources
There was not enough farmland so people tried to go to other places so they could gather more resources
Greek city-states waged war on each other (fighting for control of resources)
Colonization
Greek city-states began colonizing lands around the Mediterranean (parts of lands known today as Spain, France, Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, and northern Africa) for resources and trade.
These colonies were independent, but still had to answer to the Greek parent city-state
Sailors began to sail along the Mediterranean and trade thrived (grew strong and healthy)
Goods and Trade
Greece's economy grew as a result of the new trade and goods exchanged
Pottery and other goods were made as a result of this trade period
Cultural Diffusion
Cultural Diffusion is the exchange of ideas
During Greece's new trade period, many Greek ideas were spread throughout the Mediterranean
Greece also learned new ideas from other peoples across the Mediterranean
