Ancient India
Harappan Civilization
Harappan Civilization
Harappa is located in the Indus Valley
Its advanced culture and food surpluses made it one of the largest of its time
It was occupied between 3000-1500 BCE
Advanced Culture
The Harappan culture was so advanced that some of their seals have features seen in modern Hinduism, such as the god Shiva
The Harappan influence spread across a 500,000-square-mile area (This was greater than Egypt or Mesopotamia)
Archaeologists can’t figure out the Harappan writing system. It seems to be based on pictograms, almost like Sumerian cuneiform
Harappan Homes
Harappan houses were built with burnt bricks to last thousands of years. The interlocking brick pattern increased how strong the walls were
Many houses were around two or one stories tall, some with courtyards
They had functioning draining systems that would lead into the wells inside the homes. Many houses even had separate bathing areas
Trade Network
Harappans were long-distance traders, they used boats and what seems to be the first wheeled vehicles
Their trading route was so far that they extended over the valley's mountains into what is now known as Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq
Archaeologists have found Harappan copper, gold, and ivory in these parts
