Sargon Conquers Mesopotamia
Sargon's Reign
Sargon was an outsider who conquered and ruled Mesopotamia
He conquered the city-states of Sumer and Northern Mesopotamia
Sargon ruled the world's first empire (a single ruler governing different lands and peoples) after conquering the city-states of Mesopotamia
Sargon's Early Years
Sargon supposedly was abandoned by his mother
His mother, a royal priestess, put him in a basket and placed him in basket and placed him in a river where he floated away
He was found by a simple gardener from Kish and raised him
When he grew, he became a servant to the king of Kish
He became powerful and eventually overthrew the king
Sargon Gains Power
As the city-state of Sumer became weak from internal wars and invasions, Sargon and his armies invaded and conquered
Empire and Expansion
Sargon created the world's first empire
He ruled from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf
He was skilled at war, managing people, and overseeing projects
He allowed his conquered lands to keep their local rulers and customs (these conqured peoples had to pay a tribute, or tax, for his protection)
The Collapse
Sargon's reign brought great prosperity, or financial success
He promoted and expanded trade and control of natural resources (forests for wood, etc.)
However, his empire became too large to control and soon after his death, his sons took over but could not keep the empire togetherÂ
Enemies attacked and the empire ended
