The Israelites: A Line of Kings
The Israelites grew strong and united under a line of kings
Later, they became divided and were defeated by foreign (outside) powers
These kings were Saul, David, and Solomon
King Saul
The Israelites were attacked by the Philistines
The Israelites realized that they needed to unite under a strong leader
King Saul was appointed to rule
In 1020 B.C., King Saul fought to defend Israel against the Philistines and other enemies
King David
king David was crowned king after Saul died
He was able to unite the different tribes of Israel to fight and defeat the philistines and all their other enemiesÂ
He captured Jerusalem and made it their capital
King Solomon
King David's son, Solomon, inherited his father's kingdom
He built a great stone temple in Jerusalem
This temple became known as Solomon's Temple
It became the center of religious life
War breaks out between the Northern and Southern tribes (Israel to the north and Judah to the south)
The united kingdom splits into two
The Assyrian Empire invades and conquers Israel
They are eventually destroyed and King Nebuchadnezzar completely destroys Jerusalem and Solomon's Temple
