Christians were persecuted (treated badly for their religious beliefs) by the Romans
Chrisitians were killed for their belief in Christianity and not worshipping the emperor
Nero blamed Christians for a fire that spread through Rome and had thousands of Christians killed
Being a Christian was punishable by death in ancient Rome
Christians worshipped in secret because of their fear of being caught
Constantine
Constantine prayed for help the night before a battle
He saw a vision of the cross and had his soldiers paint the cross on their shields
Constantine won the battle and put an end to the Christian persecution
Constantine became emperor and made changes in the way Christians were treated
He built churches and made Sunday the Christian day of rest
Constantine ruled for a long time and after his reign, Theodosius officially closed the Roman temples and made Christianity the official religion of Rome
The Organization of the Church
As Christianity becomes legal, Christian leaders are able to organize and begin to give the church structure
Churches were led by a priest and groups of churches were led by a bishop
The apostle Peter was the first bishop of the Roman Christian church
The First Pope
The Bishop of the Christian church eventually becomes the Pope
The Pope was the leader of the Roman Catholic Church
The church announced that the standard belief in Christianity was the belief in the Fathers, Son, and Holy Ghost
Christianity became a powerful religion
