OUR VALUES - Friendship - Honesty - Kindness - Respect - Trust
The last few weeks have been VERY busy for the upper stages! A massive thank you for all your support and kind words following the P4-7 performance. All of the classes did a superb job and we were incredibly proud of Primary 5 in how they stood on that stage with such confidence! Their musical abilities whilst playing various instruments during "Eye of the Tiger" and their dance moves during "Revolting Children" were fabulous!
As we move into our final days in Primary 5 for this academic year, please know that the time we have spent getting to know and teach your children has been a pleasure and we will look back on the year with fond memories.
Here are some photos from the last few weeks to enjoy together with your child!
A busy couple of days with Primary 5 this week as our preparations ramped up to get ready for the upper stages show!
Each family will have received 2 tickets for the Tuesday morning performance and 2 tickets for the Wednesday morning performance. If you have any questions regarding these, please contact the office for further information.
We did some little editing tasks based on our poetry writing from last week. On Tuesday, Primary 5 were given time to create a small world using lots of loose parts and dinosaurs for this purposeful play activity. Then they were given time to complete a short writing task - a minimum of 4 lines - but they could choose the text type that they completed. Some chose poetry, descriptions or even wrote a recount of how they had worked together to create their small worlds. Enjoy looking at some of the pictures below! P5 also had a look at some OLD dinosaur magazines. They enjoyed looking at these! Some of the class also attended a dinosaur wedding - we all were given the opportunity to make a speech at it and celebrated their dino-love!
Primary 5 also completed a short spelling activity where we came up with words from a root word in pairs.
We recapped our knowledge of equivalent fractions from the past few weeks. Some of the class were shading in equivalent fractions and others were finding equivalent fractions using their knowledge of multiplication and division.
We went outside for a short time to practise our ball skills - throwing, catching and bouncing with tennis balls.
We added more dance moves to our song for the school show!
P5 watched Newsround and we discussed the upcoming World Cup!
P4-7 were in the hall together on both Monday and Tuesday afternoon to begin rehearsals pulling all the pieces together! P5 sounded excellent!
We were so lucky to have such beautiful weather on Monday and Tuesday - particularly for our Sports Day which took place on Tuesday afternoon.
A reminder that homework has now finished as we begin June - no homework will be given out now until the end of the school year. Make sure to get outside and enjoy the bright nights as they seem to disappear as quickly as they arrive!
Thafully my job is not a photographer as I have been useless at getting pictures this week! Only a few to add - apologies!
Mrs Bell
We learned about rhyming schemes in poems and how to identify the rhyming patterns that a poem may be following. P5 did this on Monday and then we discussed what we liked and did not like about some other poems on Tuesday, before having a go at writing a short poem about a troll with smelly feet - inspired by a picture shared on the clevertouch screen.
Primary 5 have been working SO hard on their fractions knowledge and I am so incredibly proud of how interested they have become in learning more and more. This week we looked at equivalent fractions and identifying these - next week we will continue to look at them a little bit more before moving on to our final fractions topic which will be findng a fraction of an amount.
It was such a lovely afternoon for Primary 5 and the rest of the upper school - the sun was out, spirits were high and everyone was excited for an afternoon full of activity!
We begun with 8 potted sports, where each house group were split into two and then they went round to gain as many points as possible for their house!
Then we went onto the MUGA for our races - an obstacle race, egg and spoon and running! There were then a couple of extra special races - house team relay, a Mum race, a Dad race and of course, a toddlers race!
Primary 5 were all great sports and should be so proud of themselves for participating. A big well done to those who placed in the races!
It was lovely to have 2 consecutive days in school together again this week after a couple of disjointed weeks previously. P5 worked really hard on both Monday and Tuesday this week and I've been so impressed with their learning. It isn't easy getting used to a new teacher for term 4, so I am very grateful for their patience!
Mrs Bell
This week P5 typed up their recounts about our class trip that they had written last week after looking at any corrections/ suggestions that they were given in their feedback.
To practise our spelling words, we played a short memory game for a bit of fun and also found a way to incorporate developing our spelling skills!
We also looked at rhyming words and syllables as a starter task as we begin a short block of work on poetry. In pairs we wrote short 4 line poems with an ABAB rhyming pattern.
P5 were fractions superstars this week and worked independently through a number of tasks that showed they are all very confident in identifying individual fractions that are smaller or larger, as well as naming fractions! I was so impressed with them! Well done P5!
We also played some strategy and logic games at the end of the day on Tuesday - P5 were having such a great time with them that they chose to continue to use them during reflective time!
With the May Day holiday and our class trip to Farr Woods I thought it would be best to combine the update for these weeks! Thank you to our lovely family helpers that joined us on our trip - we really appreciated their time and support in helping us to take our learning outside of the classroom!
Mrs Bell
After our trip to the woods, we wrote a recount the following day in school.
We've been continuing our learning about fractions and began practising how to name fractions and additionally, ordering fractions - there have been some misconceptions to iron out, but we are definitely getting there!
P5 have been working VERY hard behind the scenes, putting in lots of work for their performance for the upper school show in the middle of June. We are looking forward to continuing to learn the lyrics and make sure we all have a moment to shine!
We had a fabulous time at Farr Woods for our class trip! Primary 6 joined us and it was lovely to have their company too. Whilst at Farr Woods we completed the following activities:
Journey Stick - we walked round the trail and found interesting pieces of nature to attach to our sticks to tell the story of our journey
Colour Hunt - we tried to find as many things around us that matched with the colour chart
Hidden Nature Challenge - we tried finding 5 items that matched the criteria given such as smallest sign of nature or something with a pattern
Den Building - our favourite activity of the day...the dens we built were AWESOME!
Have a wee look at the photos below that show all the fun that we had!
It was really nice to be back in school after the weekend with Primary 5 on Monday and Tuesday. It felt good to be in for a run of days as we get used to new routines and learn more about each other.
I hope everyone enjoyed their week!
Mrs Bell
On Monday, Primary 5 tried writing a description of a character of their choice using the same success criteria as they had been given last week. They had been given individual feedback as well as whole class feedback, and self-assessed their work.
On Tuesday, they completed the same activity but this time with slightly altered success criteria with them trying to use; a defining statement, an action statement and a concluding statement within their descriptive paragraph. This work will be marked by Mrs Bell and then the class will look at their feedback next week to try and improve upon their writing.
Mrs Tulloch was in class for an hour on Tuesday morning and covered spelling and grammar work with P5. They looked into the correct use of the homophone - there, their and they're as this was a target that Mrs Bell had noticed could improve the grammar of their writing work.
We recapped the game 'Snap Out of It' as a maths warm up which focusses on quick recall of doubles facts before going into a whole class discussion about our word problem from Friday. P5 were very good at being respectful when sharing their thoughts on everyones varying solutions to the problem.
P5 looked at how we name fractions - this is something we will go into further detail on next week and also completed 2 further word problems, providing well laid out solutions and explanations as to why they believed their answer was correct. We also discussed the importance of parts being equal and being more accurate when completing our drawings.
In PE we continued to focus on our stamina and running skills. We looked at practising our fast feet and core strength. Then we practised our reaction times when leaving the starting line to ensure we can be as fast as possible!
A huge thank you to Primary 5 for making we feel so welcome on my first few days in P5 this week! It has been so lovely to be back at school with such a great class too!
This term I am taking on responsibiltiy for the blog - so I shall pop a short post up each week with some of the activities we have completed on a Monday and Tuesday!
Looking forward to having a lovely summer term together!
Mrs Bell
P5 shared their vocabulary knowledge on Tuesday and we looked at words associated with temperature. They then worked in small groups to organise these words in a gradient to show an understanding of the varying strength of each word.
They also worked on a short warm up task, similar to countdown, where they could only use a letter once and had to see how many words they could come up with. The whole class were so focused on this task!
On Friday we completed very short descriptive sentences about Shrek independently. We are going to build on these next week to try and improve upon them once we have had a look at our individual feedback in addition to whole class feedback and discussion. On Friday afternoon the pupils chose 2 characters that they are going to write about so hopefully they've been thinking about this over the weekend without even realising!
This term we are going to focus our Mondays and Tuesday on developing our fractions, decimals and percentages knowledge. Fractions are always the number topic that people seem to fear the most! My aim this term is to have everyone feeling more confident about their knowledge of fractions and iron out any misconceptions that they may have. A lot of our work will be done whole class and will involve a lot of word problems and discussions around different solutions to these.
This week I introduced Counting Collections, a new card game called "Snap Out of It!" and my approach to word problems. Primary 5 did a super job in learning about all of these and I really hope that by the end of the term we will be really quick and efficient in participating in these tasks.
Another favourite of mine is "Which One Doesn't Belong?" Have a look at the image below and see if you can figure out a reason for why each image is the odd on out compared to the others.
We started off our atheltics block by looking at running skills - building our stamina and learning about relay race technique. P5 were very determined to push themselves but we had to split our session between outside and inside due to the heat on Friday and made sure we stayed hydrated throughout!
