One of the highlights of our week was our Christmas lunch. The children enjoyed sitting together, listening to Christmas music and sharing a special festive meal. They showed lovely table manners and it was wonderful to see everyone chatting and smiling together.
🔤 Literacy
This week we completed some phonics assessments. The children worked so hard and tried their very best. We are very proud of the progress they are making with recognising sounds, blending words and forming letters correctly.
In writing, we enjoyed a fun and imaginative “Melted Snowman” activity. The children wrote about why their snowman had melted, coming up with some very creative ideas! ☀️
We also practised writing independent sentences, including sentences such as “A sad man.” The children focused on using finger spaces, neat letter formation and sounding out words independently. It is fantastic to see their confidence growing.
🔢 Numeracy & Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about money, focusing on recognising and naming different coins. The children explored the value of coins through practical activities and games.
We also continued working on ordering numbers to 20 and finding missing numbers in number sequences. The children are becoming much more confident counting forwards and backwards and spotting which number comes next.
What a busy, festive and fantastic week we have had in Primary 1!
🔤 Literacy – Letters c, k and ck
This week we have been learning about the letters c ,k and ck. We explored how c and k can both make the same sound and how ck often comes at the end of short words like duck and sock.
🎭 Bethlehem Bake Off – Nativity Performances
We are so incredibly proud of the children for their amazing Bethlehem Bake Off Nativity performances! They sang beautifully, listened carefully and were a great audience to P3.
Thank you to everyone who came along to support — it meant so much to the children. They were super stars! ⭐
🎄 Getting into the Christmas Spirit
This week we decorated our classroom for Christmas. The children worked together to put up decorations and create a warm, festive space to enjoy together.
We also learned all about Advent — what it means and why people celebrate it. We talked about counting down to Christmas and the importance of kindness, patience and giving during this special time of year.
🧸 Learning Through Play
We have had lots of fun play opportunities this week. Through play, the children continue to develop their communication, creativity, problem-solving skills and friendships. It is wonderful to see them collaborating and using their imaginations.

In phonics, we have been playing lots of CVC blending games to strengthen our reading skills.
We also learned a new letter — Oo. We practised saying the sound, forming the letter correctly and thinking of words that begin with o, have o in the middle or end in o. We also thought about the sound that is made when there are two o sounds together.
We have had a wonderful week full of exciting learning and special moments!
🌈 A Special Playground Surprise
At the beginning of the week, we were very lucky to spot a beautiful rainbow in the playground! The children were so excited and we took time to talk about the colours we could see and why rainbows appear. It was a lovely real-life learning moment that sparked lots of curiosity and discussion.

👮♀️ People Who Help Us
We were delighted to welcome a local Community Police Officer to our classroom this week. She spoke to us about her job and how police officers help keep us safe. We linked this to our learning about people who take care of us and discussed other trusted adults who help in our community. The children listened beautifully and asked thoughtful questions.

In Health and Wellbeing, we took part in a “Fill My Bucket” activity. We talked about the positive things that make us feel happy, safe and valued. The children shared lovely ideas about kindness, friendship, family and helping others. We also discussed how our words and actions can “fill someone else’s bucket” too.
We have had a thoughtful and busy week in Primary 1, with lots of important learning and proud moments to celebrate.
🌍 World Children’s Day & Our Rights
This week we recognised World Children’s Day and spent time learning about the rights of the child. We talked about how all children have the right to feel safe, to learn, to play and to be heard.
As a Rights Respecting School, we discussed how we can show respect for everyone’s rights in our classroom. The children shared wonderful ideas about being kind, listening to others and helping our friends. It was lovely to hear them making links between rights and our classroom rules.
🔤 Literacy
In Literacy, we have been matching capital letters and lowercase letters. The children worked hard to spot the differences and pair them correctly.
We also revised the difference between letter names and letter sounds. We practised saying the letter name and then the sound it makes, helping us to strengthen our phonics knowledge and support our reading and writing.
The children are becoming much more confident explaining their learning — well done!
🎭 Nativity Preparations
We have begun organising ourselves for our Nativity and practised our standing order. The children listened carefully and followed instructions brilliantly. We are very excited as we begin preparing for this special performance!

Thank you for your continued support. It is wonderful to see the children growing in confidence, independence and understanding of the world around them.
Have a lovely weekend! 🌟
We are going to be celebrating St. Andrew's Day next Friday 28th November. It is already a Dress Down Day but the children and staff have been asked to wear some tartan, if they can.
We were learning Auld Lang Syne today to sing next week and we are attending an online concert on Friday. Scott will be in to lead assembly too.
Just a quick reminder that
- clothes must be suitable for going out in the playground
- no item of clothing should have a football badge on it
- all wording and graphics should be appropriate for under 12s
Kind Regards,

Dear Parents and Carers,
We are delighted to let you know that your child will be receiving their Bookbug Bag today!
Bookbug is a national programme in Scotland that encourages a love of stories, songs, and reading from an early age. Each bag includes carefully chosen books and fun resources to help you share reading time together at home.
Reading regularly with your child supports their language development, imagination, and confidence, and is an important part of Scotland’s early years curriculum.
In class we have made predictions about the stories included and thought about the front cover illustrations. The children are very excited to read them with you at home!
We hope you enjoy exploring the books together and creating special reading moments as a family.
Kind Regards,
Miss Sophie Shepherd and Miss Gemma Munro
P1 Teaching Team
We have had another busy and successful week in Primary 1!
🔤 Literacy
This week we have been practising blending our SATPIN sounds to read words and we are becoming so confident! The children have been reading and writing simple SATPIN words independently, which is a fantastic achievement at this stage.
We also explored exciting onomatopoeia vocabulary linked to fireworks. We came up with words like bang, pop, whoosh and crash to describe the sounds fireworks make. The children loved saying the words out loud and hearing how the sounds match the action!
🔢 Numeracy & Maths
In Numeracy, we have been working on rainbow to 10 🌈. The children are learning number bonds that make 10 and using practical materials to help them see the patterns. This supports quick recall and builds strong foundations for addition.
We also played lots of fun addition games and activities, using cubes, counters, tens frames and number lines to help us add two numbers together. The children are beginning to explain their thinking — well done!
🌍 French
In French, we have been learning our colours. The children enjoyed saying and practising the colour names and identifying colours around the classroom. We try to say our lunch choice colour in French now. It’s wonderful to see their interest in another language growing!
❤️ Health & Wellbeing
This week we focused on safety and responsibility by organising our cloakroom area. We talked about how keeping our space tidy helps everyone stay safe and makes it easier to find our belongings. The children worked together brilliantly and showed great teamwork skills.
We also took part in Children in Need activities, thinking about how we can help others and show kindness. Thanks to P7 for organising the yummy biscuits too!
🌺 Remembrance
Primary 1 visited the beautiful Poppy Memorial Cascade created by all of the classes with Primary 6 leadership. We discussed remembering and showing respect and the children were very thoughtful during our visit.
What a busy and exciting week we have had in Primary 1!
🔤 Literacy
This week we focused on the letters Tt and Pp.
For t, we practised forming the letter correctly and thought of words that begin with that sound, have the sound in the middle and at the end. We made some terrific tigers to help us remember the sound and put them on the wall – they look fantastic!
For p, we created perfect pumpkins, linking our learning to the autumn season. Primary 1 are becoming much more confident in recognising initial sounds and forming letters correctly.
We have also been practising blending sounds together to read simple words.
We really enjoyed seeing Forbes’ this week. Thank you for sharing it with us – we loved seeing it and asking questions.
🎆 Expressive Arts & Fine Motor Skills
We created beautiful pointillism poppies as part of our learning about Remembrance Day. We used careful finger control to make small painted dots with cotton bus, developing their fine motor skills.
We also made chalk fireworks for Bonfire Night, exploring colour and pattern while strengthening our grip and control.
Our penguins are now up on the wall too! 🐧 These helped us practise our cutting skills and we are becoming much more confident using scissors safely and accurately.
❤️ Remembrance Day
We talked about Remembrance Day in a gentle and age-appropriate way, focusing on kindness, helping others and remembering people who care for us. We linked this to a lovely friendship story, discussing how we can be good friends and show respect and care for one another.
Annabel kindly made lots of poppy pictures at home and brought them in to share with the class. Thank you, Annabel – we loved seeing your hard work!
🔢 Numeracy & Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We explored cubes, spheres, cones and cuboids, talking about whether they stack or roll. The children enjoyed finding 3D shapes in our classroom environment.
🌟 Celebrating Success
A huge well done to Harris and Rory for celebrating their recent successes. We are so proud of you both! It is always lovely to celebrate achievements together as a class.
This Week in P1: Spooky Fun and Fantastic Learning!
This week in Primary 1, we had an exciting mix of learning activities centred around letters, numbers, and all things Halloween! Here's a peek at what we’ve been up to:
Our little learners have been exploring the sounds and formation of the letters Ss and Aa. From practicing how to write the letters in capital and small formation, to identifying them in stories and around the classroom, we’re building strong early literacy skills!
Here are some highlights:
Sound Spotting: We listened for words starting with “Ss” and “Aa” in our favourite books and during conversations.
Art with Letters: Children created colourful artwork featuring snakes, stars, apples, and astronauts!
Practice Makes Perfect: Through fun tracing and matching activities, everyone had a chance to practice forming their letters beautifully.
Why not try this at home? See how many words starting with “Ss” and “Aa” you can find during a walk or while reading together.
Take a look at what we will be learning in our second term in Primary 1S!
