OUR VALUES - Friendship - Honesty - Kindness - Respect - Trust
Writing
We have enjoyed writing our 500 Word stories. This week, we have gone for the craziest storylines we can think off. Next term, we will try another style of writing and the children will choose their favourite. When this is complete, a letter will go out and you can choose whether to submit the story or not.
Our focus has been on nouns and verbs. Every sentence requires a verb and we have been working hard to identify and understand these.
Maths
We have been developing our addition and subtraction strategies.
Place value partitioning has been really helping us to understand addition. We will use it to support subtraction next!
See picture below for breakdown
French
Our online weekly French sessions have come to an end.
We will continue to work on this in class, but it has been very helpful and engaging.
Reading
This week, we trialled some 'choral reading'. This is where all children in the small group read at the same time. It lets us all read aloud a lot more often.
We have also continued our class novel (Accidental Prime Minsiter). This week, we will complete the story and have some fun deciding what we would do if we were the Prime Minsiter. Within the story, a child becomes the Prime Minister and creates a lot of fun rules!
500 Words Live Lesson
WE WERE ON TV!
"it was so exciting and amazing to see ourselves on TV"
We took part in the BBC Live Lesson for the 500 Words Competition. We will offer all children the chance to enter the competition. Winners from the UK are invited to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen and have their story read on TV.
We will be writing some stories and children can choose to enter if they wish.
Ross County
We have been working on our football skills with Ross County for a few weeks. This week, we played some warm up games and then short games of football.
Photos
Photos were taken over the last 2 days and we will share them with you as soon as they are ready.
Orienteering
We begun to learn about orienteering.
We drew table top maps, allowing us to understand what things look like from above. We then used a map of the MUGA to learn how to find particular spots on the map. Next week, if the weather allows, we will do a maths task outside as an orienteering challenge.
Reading
In our groups, we learnt how to play:
Guess my Word (next week's homework task)
Fluency reading
Started and finished short books.
A short week this week!
Spelling:
We explored some different patterns for the /i/ sound. We worked with two different spelling patterns for this sound:
'i' (pin, thin, wind etc)
'y' (system, mystery etc)
We looked at a colour coding system for:
short vowel sounds (a,e,i,o,u) = red
long vowel sounds (ay, ee, igh, ow, ue, oo) = blue
consonant sounds = green
e.g. pin system thin green
These colours relate to our spelling display in the class and will hopefully help the children to remember the difference between these sounds.
Maths
We begun to look at different approaches to addition and subtraction, and tried a variety of questions to understand our areas to improve.
Some examples:
addition and subtraction within 10: adding with a maximum answer of 9 and subtracting from a maximum of 9 (e.g. 3+5, 9-3)
addition and subtraction through 10: bridging across a ten (6+7, 12 - 5)
multiples of 10 only (10 + 10, 30 + 40, 40 - 10, 60 - 40)
Multiples of 10 and non multiples of 10 (21 + 10, 43 + 20, 58 - 10, 73 - 30)
Non multiples of 10 with no bridging of 10 or 100 (23 + 42, 245 + 314, 45 - 31, 658 - 216)
Non multiples of 10 with bridging of 10 or 100 (23 + 49, 245 + 394, 45 - 38, 658 - 219)
This week, we will focus on the areas we found difficult and share this for homework.
Exciting news!
Our 'Live Lesson' with Sir Lenny Henry and the BBC will be on this Wednesday. We will watch it Live in Class but it will be available here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/live-lessons
Although children were asked to speak during our filming, the Live Lesson team have been clear that only 1 question per school will be used. We discussed this in class so that the children are aware that even if they spoke during our filming, that does not mean that it will be shown on the Live Lesson. This is something that we have no control over and is the decision of the BBC team.
BBC Live Lessons
We recorded our lesson for the BBC Live Lessons show. This will be aired on September 24th. I will send a link to everyone when it is on the Iplayer. 3 children were asked to ask a question, but only one of these will be aired (we do not know who it will be).
The children conducted some writing tasks and their questions will be put to Sir Lenny Henry!
Exciting times!
Bake Off
April, Digby, Grace, Iris, Sadie and Mason all created amazing cakes for our Bake off. They were incredible (and very tasty)
Ross County
Ross County have been in and supported us to play games and football. We are building up our skills.
Fables
We listened to The Bundle of Sticks: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/articles/zbynxyc
Give it a read or listen and see if you can suggest what you think the moral of the story is.
Maths: dragon slaying:
We worked on our problem solving to slay a dragon. The rules are below so that you can try it for yourself:
Start with a dragon which has 3 heads and 3 tails. If you remove all heads and tails, you have successfully defeated the dragon.
Remove 1 head --> 1 head grows back
Remove 2 heads --> nothing regrows
Remove 1 tail --> 2 tails grow back
Remove 2 tails --> 1 head grows back
Good luck! Can you beat our fastest knight (James) and defeat the dragon?
French:
We learnt vocabulary for numbers, months of the year, days of the week and birthdays.
un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix, onze...
We have learnt different ways to greet each other in the morning, do our register and order lunch.
Lunch choices: 'orange', (orange) 'bleu' (blue) ou (or) vert (green).
Gretings: bonjour, je suis ici, bon matin, coucou, salut, je suis fatigue, je suis heureux
Rangoli patterns:
Ms Adair taught us about Rangoli patterns. We learnt about their deisgns, what is used to create them and when they are made.
Music:
We learnt to play Row, Row, Row Your Boat on a collection of instruments. We used the piano, glockenspiel, xylophones and keyboards. It was amazing!
Maths:
We learnt a place value game.
Aim: create the largest number possible.
How to play:
Draw 5 lines on a page. This will be where you write the digits.
Roll a 9 sided dice. Place the digit rolled into one of the 5 spaces. When it is written, it cannot be changed.
Continue until all spaces are full.
Read your number.
We also chose our favourite numbers. What are your favourite numbers?
"27 trillion" - I was so impressed that this number was written correctly!
Writing
We have used the 'describing bubble' to describe monsters. We use 8 different perspectives to make effective descriptions:
Size
Shape
Judgement
Action
Position
Colour
Texture
Number.
This allowed us to change simple sentences into something more effective:
The monster is green. It has three eyes. It is slimy.
The monster is green but has five dark green spots. It has three eyes and these are on top of his head. It is slimy but has a small smile on his face.
Charter
We chose a nature theme for our Class Charter. Every child used the visual element of line to create a artistic representation of an animal. These lines were grey or black.
On our background, children used vibrant colours to create a series of flowers, leaves and plants.
We stuck the animal on top of the background. The black and white animal contrasted well to the colourful background.
Drum fun
We had Drum Fun visit our class for a session. It was incredible. The class described it as 'the best thing ever' and 'fun, but loud'.
We learnt how to use our body, voice and a drum to create rhythmical sounds.
Ask your child to show off their new skills at home.
Welcome to the Primary 4 page!
It was lovely to get to meet everyone again after a long summer. The children all settled into their new surroundings well and I feel we are going to have a great year.
Highlights:
We played a variety of talking and listening games. This helped us to learn everyone's name, get to know what people enjoyed, and to learn some new information about each other.
Art: We made a pop up version of ourselves. Children chose any colour they wished to make a colourful representation of themselves. These have brightened up our classroom wall! (We are putting final touches on some of them, so I will add a picture on Monday when they are all up!)
French:
We have begun to learn some new vocabulary. Every day this year, we will be developing our French skills. This week, we learnt how to say hello (bonjour), good morning (bon matin), good afternoon (bon apres-midi), here (ici) and I am here (je suis ici).
As the year develops, we will use a variety of classroom commands and questions in French.
I have signed us up to a set of lessons with the Northern Alliance French Team. Each week, we will participate in sessions led by a French expert.
PE:
Our PE days will be Monday and Wednesday.
I will add the photos of our first week once everyone has finished their final touches on Monday.
