Categories are an excellent way to group related grade items. You might, e.g., have a category for Assignments, another for Quizzes, and a third for Exams. If you want to use categories, it is easiest to create them prior to adding any grade items since you can designate a particular category when you create a new grade item. You can, however, move items around later.
Faculty should determine in which organizational structure he/she wishes to adopt before adding the categories to their gradebook. When deciding, remember this is the view your students will see when viewing their grades. Many students find it helpful to use the chronological format to ensure they do not miss an assignment.
Click the [Add category] button at the bottom of the screen.
Configure settings for this particular category:
Give the category a name (e.g., Week One, Exams, Quizzes, Labs).
The aggregation type is automatically defaulted to Natural.
Click the [Save changes] button.
When you are on the Gradebook setup page, click the Edit drop-down menu next to the category you would like to edit.
Select “Edit settings”
Make any necessary changes.
Click the [Save changes] button.
To change the order of columns in the Grader report, move grade items into categories, or move categories.
When you are on the Gradebook setup page, to move a category up or down, click on the move icon next to the item you would like to move.
Select the empty box where you want to move the item to.
Click the [Save changes] button.
Another method is to click on the small box on the far right of the item(s) you wish to move to a particular category, on the drop down menu "move selected items" choose the category and hit save.
Grade items and categories that were created in the gradebook can be deleted from the Gradebook Setup page.
Note: Grade items associated with Moodle activities (such as an Assignment or Quiz) can only be deleted from the gradebook by deleting the activity from your main course page.
Choose a manual grade item to delete.
Under the Actions column for that item, click Edit and from the drop-down select
Delete. The Delete confirmation page will open.
On the Delete confirmation page, click Yes.
Note: If you delete a category containing items, those items will not be deleted but will instead be moved into the parent category.
