Course overview - Study Period 3
Half term 1: What was more significant in British History - rats, rebels or the reformation?
Learners will investigate the causes and events of the Black Death, and then examine the consequences of the Black Death through a documentary.
We will then explore why the peasants of Essex were so angry. We will carry out a decision making activity to understand the causes of the Peasants revolt before watching a documentary to understand the key events.
We will then assess what was reformed during the reformation? We will compare a protestant and catholic church to see what changed during the reformation, and find out why Henry brought it to England. Then we will assess how revolutionary was the reformation? Learners will create a 'tudor reformation rollercoaster' to see the immediate impact of the reformation, before researching why it was so significant over time.
We will then complete an assessment through designing a poster - What was more significant - Rats, Rebels or the Reformation? Decide on the most significant event and come up with criteria to help judge the event's significance.
Half term 2: Should we be proud of the British Empire?
Learners will investigate the history of slavery through an outstanding book ‘Copper Sun’ which tells the story of a 15 year old girl, Kwasi. Kwasi is enslaved and experiences the horror of the middle passage and transportation to the Americas, before being sold into slavery and working on a plantation. This is a work of historical fiction, but tells an engaging story of the horrors of racism and greed.
Learners will then explore other case studies of the British empire, including India and Australia. We will also look at the positives and negatives that the British Empire brought to countries across the world.
