Course overview - Study Period 1 and 2
During the first half term, study period 1, learners will read the story 'Refugee Boy' by Benjamin Zephaniah, which will develop their cultural capital. They will learn the context of the novel and then explore its plot. Learners will also be crafting informed personal responses, which will be developed using the words because, but, and so. Learners will also learn how to select quotations to back up their argument and how to embed them into sentences.
During the second half term, study period 2, learners will study the topic of ‘Wonderful Literary People and Places’. Learners will be introduced to a range of famous fictional works to inspire their creative writing. They will be taught a range of literacy techniques, including MASTS devices and vocabulary, and will use these in their descriptive writing. Learners will also be developing their technical accuracy, including sentence types, basic punctuation and advanced punctuation. There is also an opportunity for learners to develop their speaking and listening skills in a collaborative group challenge.

Assessment Points:
Learners will undertake two longer written assessments per half term: a baseline at the start and a summative piece towards the end.
They will also have a variety of low stakes quizzes, such as recall activities at the beginning of the lesson.
Guidance:
Learners will receive guidance in a variety of ways. These include marked assessments, reports, verbal feedback, written feedback in books, 1:1 interaction, Google Classroom and whole class feedback.
