Wednesday, June 3rd was Relay for Life, and it was a huge success. Relay for life, an event organized by the Canadian Cancer Society, is a community fundraising event aimed towards raising money for cancer research and patient support.
The event at T.A. Blakelock ran from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and throughout the day, there were various activities, which kept students enthusiastic and full of spirit. Some notable activities were the watermelon eating contest, the obstacle course, the scavenger hunt, the Slippin’ slide, and the chalk colour wars.
Leading up to the event, 31 teams were formed. During the Relay for Life event, students walked, ran, or even danced laps around the track, and then added a mark under their team’s name. Blakelock students also made the most of the hot weather by playing outdoor games like bucket golf, volleyball, and frisbee.

In the weeks leading up to the event, teams gathered donations through garage sales, bottle drives, online donations, and more. In total, Blakelock raised over $30,000! Despite it being around half of our goal, it is still amazing to see so many people working hard to support such a special cause.
The most powerful moment of the night was the luminary ceremony, in which paper lanterns were illuminated with light to honor those who have battled cancer.
All in all, this year’s Relay for Life event was a success. It was so fun and full of team and school spirit, but most of all, it really showed how a community can work together to support cancer patients and cancer research. We hope to see even more participants next year!
