Two groups from T.A. Blakelock’s I-STEM are making waves after placing top 8 nationally in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, earning $5,000 each.
This competition challenges students to apply their STEM skills to solve a problem in their community by creating a bold, innovative solution. The Blakelock teams presented in front of a panel of judges, including a Research Director of Samsung AI’s Research Center. While they didn’t win, it was an incredible experience to be able to present in front of industry professionals on a national level. The teams were cheered on by many I-STEM students who spent the day at Samsung headquarters, where they had the chance to try out new Samsung technologies and watch the presentations.
After hearing about their project, MP for Oakville West, Sima Acan invited the students to her office, where they had the opportunity to share more about their work and learn about the future of STEM and innovation in Canada.
These two groups also had the opportunity to present at the I-CON conference alongside two other I-STEM schools, Aldershot and Elsie MacGill. Competing against other strong presentations and innovative ideas, the Blakelock teams stood out, winning first and second. In attendance were Angel Investors Frank Auddino and Doris Valade, who invited Greenspan, a Blakelock team, to two Angel Investor conferences in October.
“This whole thing started out as just a school project, and it’s gone so much further than I ever expected. It’s really cool that we’re getting the chance to turn our idea into an actual product,” said a member of the Greenspan team, Atharv.
