On Friday, September 22nd, Blakelock held its annual Terry Fox Run where students from every grade came together to show their support for the strong Canadian inspiration, Terry Fox. Students and teachers worked together to create a fantastic event in hopes that more people will donate to cancer research and participate in honour of Terry Fox or a loved-one affected by cancer.
The Terry Fox Run is a charity event held in order to raise money for cancer awareness and research. In the memory of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, the run has become a tradition globally.
The event planned by both Athletic Council and the grade 12 Leadership class was a huge success. Together, the team brainstormed ideas to create a fun day that supported a fantastic cause.
The day started with a walk around the neighbourhood where teachers and students lined the streets, taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather. Students from Athletic Council were placed on certain corners of the streets to cheer on the students and give directions for the event route. Their optimism and support made the run all the more exciting and encouraged those who were running to keep going.
After the run was complete, the grade 12 leadership class hosted a barbecue where students and staff could munch on burgers, chips, sodas and freezies to keep them hydrated and energized.
With all of this excitement, Athletic Council is already thinking about next year's Terry Fox Run, especially Samantha Rickards who is a dedicated member. When asked about how she would like to see the event progress in future years at Blakelock she said, “I would love to see lots of student involvement and dedication to this event.” Samantha hopes that with the continuous success of the Terry Fox Run, more and more students will join Athletic Council.
