On Thursday May 9th, Blakelock hosted an entirely student run event: Relay for Life, a fundraising event for cancer research. Students formed groups with their friends, and sought out donations from family, friends and neighbours with the potential for prizes. All profits generated were donated to the cause.

The event had many activities to engage students and the intention was to have one team member walk the track at all times. In addition to the walk, there were zumba lessons, an obstacle course, musical chairs, and even themed laps. Themed laps were done both to entertain students and honor those the community had lost. Mr. Shanks, a popular science teacher who passed away two years ago, had a lap in his name, and students dressed in lab coats and silently walked the track in remembrance.

Relay for Life was a huge success, raising $18,000 in donations. Team Super 6, the Running Rangers and the School of Walk were the top three teams with the most donations. Additionally, Riley Cheeseman, a grade 9 student, managed to raise over $1000.00, marking her the top fundraising individual. The team, The Slimey Goats, won the award for most laps.
One of the student leaders of the event, Julia Sheppard, stated her thoughts on the event and enthusiasm of entrants, saying, “Overall, the event went really well with our school showing a ton of school spirit.”

This was the first year Relay for Life was hosted at Blakelock. We’re beyond excited for next year and can’t wait to see what Relay for Life 2025 has in store!
