New In: Mr Nguyen

This year, Blakelock is welcoming many new teachers and faculty staff. The Math department has been joined by numerous teachers, including Mr. Nguyen. Mr. Nguyen (pronounced “New-yen") teaches grade 9 Math and grade 11 Physics. He has wanted to be a teacher his whole life and is fulfilling his career aspirations here at Blakelock.

Mr. Nguyen attended Brock University’s five year Concurrent Teacher Education Program. While there, he majored in Math and minored in Physics. He recalls this as a fantastic experience that helped ease the transition from schooling to teaching. He reminisces about helping other students in grade school just as he does at Blakelock today. Although this is his seventh year teaching, this is his first year at Blakelock teaching full time. 

Every morning, Mr. Nguyen wakes up and the first thing he does is change his baby’s diaper. He treasures this quality time with his daughter. After getting ready in the morning, he heads off to school. 

Students in his class say that he has a very unique teaching style. Mr. Nguyen starts off the period by placing his students into random groups of three. Within these groups the students will have to try to problem solve the answer to a question based on their prior knowledge with no instruction from him. This is a new approach to learning for some students. Mr. Nguyen’s grade 9 Math student Natalie explained, “This teaching technique will help to further my understanding.”

In his free time, Mr. Nguyen practices his basketball skills in the large gym. Basketball is one of his favourite pastimes, as he constantly works to improve his game. His favourite basketball team, like most Canadians, is the Toronto Raptors. Mr. Nguyen is extremely passionate about the original Star Wars movies, and The Lord of Rings series. 

Make sure to drop by E201 and introduce yourself to Mr. Nguyen. While you are there you might learn a little more about Math, Star Wars, or even basketball and receive some encouraging words from Mr. Nguyen.
