On Wednesday, September 28, the Blakelock community came together to celebrate the Terry Fox run, honouring the great Canadian hero Terry Fox.
Why Do We Run?
Terry Fox was a young Canadian from the province of British Columbia who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 18, which led to the amputation of his leg. After realizing what kind of suffering people with cancer go through behind hospital doors, the ambitious Terry knew something needed to be done - and that he needed to do it. Fox set out to raise money for cancer research through his Canadian cross-country run, which began with him dipping his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean. Once he reached the Pacific, he would do the same—marking the end and fulfillment of his desired journey. After running a total of 5,373 kilometres, Terry was forced to stop running around Thunder Bay, Ontario. His goal was cut short due to his condition, but nothing could erase the impact and legacy Terry left behind; money is raised for cancer research in his name, and runs are held in his honour year round—not merely nationally, but internationally as well. Terry Fox is a symbol of selfless ambition, determination and Canadian pride.
Let’s take a look at how our Blakelock staff and students honoured him this year!
Blakelock’s Terry Fox celebration began with a virtual assembly, which featured the land acknowledgement and then spoke of some history behind why we run. It all started with the 1980 “Marathon of Hope'' and over the years, $750 million dollars has been raised for the cause. The foundation is also a leading national charity for cancer research. This information was followed by a video which featured our TAB mascot, Tabby the Tiger, and students asking people who they ran for.
After the assembly the walk/run began, which was led by the Grade 12 Athletic Leadership class and Athletic Council. From organizing to participating, the school’s wonderful volunteers planned the walking and running routes, cheered students on, and kept school spirit alive throughout the day. Walkers and runners wore TAB colours to show their school pride. They were also given the opportunity to write the names of their loved ones—who have and/or had been affected by cancer—on stickers. Lots of students shared that they were running for their parents, grandparents, and friends.

During lunch after the run, there was a barbecue on the football field for the entire school to enjoy, which was organized and led by Ms. Northey's Grade 12 Athletic Leadership class. At the lunchtime event, there was music playing while people gathered with their friends on the field - playing with footballs and frisbees. Burgers, chips, and beverages were sold with all proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation. This year, Blakelock proudly met the $2000 fundraising goal.
Overall, Blakelock’s 2022 Terry Fox Run was a big success! On behalf of the TAB community, we thank the students & staff involved in the planning and organizing - a huge shoutout to Athletic Council, the Athletic Leadership class, Ms. Northey and Mr. Alchesi among others! Go Tigers!
