Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and an important one for Muslims all around the world. In this month, Muslims believe the Holy Book of the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) making these thirty days very blessed. Because of this, Muslims fast for 30 days from sunrise to sunset, and take this as an opportunity to get closer to God by praying.
This year the core MSA members teamed up to arrange an event where you could learn more about Ramadan’s importance and enjoy breaking your fast with other people.
We began our event with a recitation of a small section of the Quran, beautifully done by a former Blakelock student, Abdullah.
Next, we introduced Mr. Qaiser Ahmed, who is a vice principal with the TDSB, and helped form the Islamic Heritage Month resource book. He gave an amazing presentation and speech about the significance of Ramadan. He talked about not only fasting for your stomach but also fasting for your ears, mouth, eyes, and feet too. This means to not listen to gossip, not spread rumours, divert your eyes from things you shouldn’t look at and let your feet take you only where you should go. These things are important in the daily life of a Muslim, but can be overlooked, so it was a beneficial reminder to have.
Afterwards, we waited for the Athaan, which is the call to prayer. To break our fasts, we waited unti the call of the evening prayer, which begins just as the sun starts to set. As a Sunnah, which means the Prophet (PBUH) did this at his time, we all broke our fasts with dates. Then, we lined up for prayer together. Once we finished, it was time to eat! The event concluded shortly afterwards.
The MSA would like to give a special thanks to Ms Akbar, for helping the MSA begin the planning for the event, Ms Sagar, for giving us the motivation and helping us arrange this event when time felt short, Ms Zuberi, for helping us immensely a few days prior and the day of the event. And a massive thanks to all the staff that helped supervise and were there in case we needed anything.
TAB's MSA!
