Term 1:
In term one, we studied poetry with Ms. Quaid, focusing on revising poetic techniques and learning about some famous Irish poets such as:
Eavan Boland
Paul Durcan
Seamus Heaney
I really enjoyed this topic.
The poems we looked at were easy to read and contained lots of detail, making them interesting.
These included "A Constable Calls" by Seamus Heaney and "Nessa" by Paul Durcan.
Towards the end of the term, we each created a PowerPoint presentation on one of the Irish poets we looked at. I chose Paul Durcan, because I had never heard of him before.
Term 2:
In term 2, we learned about short stories and debate writing
While these were both difficult to write, I still enjoyed it. I'm going to have to write them next year anyway so it was a great chance for me to get a better idea of the leaving cert english course is like
It was also enjoyable watching everyone debate with eachother in class!
Term 3:
While in lockdown, we focused on the comparative study with Mr. Finn.
This plays a major role in the Leaving Cert English exam. I'm really glad I got an introduction to it in TY.
What did we do?
We learned what the comparative study is
We the opening few chapters of "Lies of Silence" by Brian Moore
We wrote about the "general vision and viewpoint" (GVV) of this
We read the opening of "Sive", a play by John B. Keane
We wrote about the GVV of this too
We then wrote an essay comparing the GVV of both pieces
When we came back to school we focused on poetry again. Except this time we learned about the different types of sonnet and wrote a sonnet ourselves which wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be!
