Overall, I think this was one of the most beneficial subjects for me this year.
Term 1:
In term one we looked at some websites with Mr. Kiely.
These websites include:
www.careersportal.ie (can help you to identify your strengths and what careers might suit you)
www.qualifax.ie (shows a schedule of college events, such as open days, and helps you to find courses available in colleges around Ireland)
We also learned about the CAO system and how to find courses available in colleges nationally.
We had to fill in a Curriculum Vitae (CV) as well.
I have actually learned a lot in this class.
Beforehand, I didn't have a clue about where to start looking for courses available in colleges around Ireland or anything like that.
Even though I'm still not sure about what career I would like to have when I'm older, these websites have given me an idea about what jobs I might be interested in and what jobs I wouldn't be as interested in.
Here are my results from an activity we did on www.careersportal.ie to help identify our strengths:
Term 2:
In term 2, we continued exploring the websites mentioned above.
We also registered for virtual open days.
In November, we went on work experience for a week. I went to my local primary school. This was a great experience. I wouldn't have gotten the chance to do this if I didn't do TY.
Term 3:
During lockdown, we had to pick our subjects for next year. After ....... a lot of thought! I finally picked:
Chemistry
Accounting
Home Ec
These websites helped me so much when making my decision, as well as asking teachers, past pupils etc.
When we came back to school we looked at the option of studying internationally:
Overall, I think this was one of the most beneficial subjects for me this year.
Before, I didn't have a clue about any of these websites or how to find courses, minimum subject requirements etc.
I definitely made a more informed decision regarding my subject choice, than if I had gone straight on from third year.
I feel more prepared to go into leaving cert, now that I know my options for after school, what I'm aiming for etc. which is brilliant!
Here is a career investigation I carried out during lockdown:
