Apprenticeship is an earn-as-you-learn career pathway that combines practical, on-the-job training with periods of in-class technical training. Depending on the trade, apprenticeship can take one to four years to complete. During hands-on training, an apprentice earns a wage while working and learning under a journeyperson. In-class training includes attending school at a technical institute for a few weeks each year.
After completing their technical training and prescribed hours of on-the-job training, apprentices are eligible to write the journeyperson examination and become certified. A Journeyperson Certificate with a Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) is recognized across Canada.

Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarships are valued at $1,000 and awarded to selected, eligible high school graduates throughout the province who have completed the SYA program and will be pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Students are nominated for SYA Industry Scholarships each April by selected provincial high schools.
To qualify for the scholarship, both the high school and the student must participate in the SYA program. In addition, the candidate must:
Complete high school in the current school year.
Hold a completed SYA Passport.
Within two years of completing high school, either enter into a contract of apprenticeship in a designated skilled trade and successfully complete the first level of technical training OR complete a Saskatchewan post-secondary training program in a designated trade.
The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) awards approximately 100 scholarships each year. Nomination forms are sent to schools, who are asked to nominate one SYA graduate. The graduate's achievements and dedication to pursuing a career in the skilled trades are considered as scholarship recipients are chosen. The scholarship certificates will be made available for presentation at the graduation ceremony or other event
