News about McGill University

Is tuition at McGill increasing for Canadian students who are not residents of Quebec?

The Government of Quebec recently announced plans to increase tuition for Canadian students from outside of Quebec. If enacted, the proposed increases would come into effect as of the Fall 2024 semester. The tuition rate currently proposed by the Government is $17,000. As McGill and other universities are in talks with the Government to lower the proposed rates, we cannot yet confirm whether tuition fees will increase for new non-Quebec Canadian students.

For international students that may attend your school, please note that rumors that tuition is doubling for international students is categorically false. The 2024-2025 tuition fees for international students have been announced and are published on the Student Accounts website. International students enjoy the benefits of a guaranteed, set tuition rate for the duration of their time at McGill, eliminating the unpredictability of year‐over‐year increases and making it easier to plan ahead. This allows prospective students to know the total cost of tuition for their degree program before committing to McGill.

Will students at McGill have to learn French?

The language of instruction at McGill is English. There is currently no requirement for students applying for Fall 2024 to take a French course. Options being considered by the Government of Quebec will not affect students applying for Fall 2024. Many of your students may already speak French or be interested in learning. Living in Montreal provides a wonderful opportunity to learn French and improve one’s fluency. McGill is planning to increase its already extensive opportunities to help students develop their French skills. For those students interested in staying in Montreal or Quebec after graduation, improving their French will positively impact the range of professional options open to them.
