Students planning to study Biology in VCE are recommended to undertake year 10 Biology. The course covers three main areas of study; cell structure and function, genetics and evolution. Students will evaluate evidence of scientific theories that explain the diversity of life on Earth and apply geological timescales to elaborate their explanations of both evolution and natural selection. They will learn about the role of DNA and genes in cell division and genetic inheritance, and explore the structure and function of cells.
Students will embark on a course of study in which a greater emphasis will be placed on investigations using the scientific method and the skills and processes that will prepare them for informed scientific participation in their world of the future. Students will develop questions and hypotheses that can be investigated using a range of inquiry skills. They will independently design investigations, including the control and accurate measurement of variables and systematic collection of data. They will analyse and communicate their findings using scientific language and conventions.
Describe and explain aspects of cellular structure and function.
Describe patterns of inheritance and predict ratios of offspring for dominant/recessive autosomal and sex linked traits.
