In this unit, students explore ceramics as both an ancient craft and a contemporary art form. By engaging with ceramics, students build skills in creativity, problem-solving, patience, and precision—qualities that are transferable beyond the art room. They will learn the importance of sustainability through responsible material use, and studio safety.
In this unit, students will develop technical knowledge of clay properties, construction techniques (slab and coil), and surface treatments, as well as an understanding of the science behind firing and glazing. Students will also investigate the cultural, historical, and social significance of ceramics throughout history.
There are two outcomes in this Unit:
Functional Slab Construction
Students will design and create a functional ceramic piece (e.g., box, tray, platter, or container) using slab building techniques. The piece must demonstrate sound construction, attention to form and function, and use appropriate surface decoration.
Sculptural Coil Vessel
Students will design and construct a larger sculptural or functional vessel using coil building techniques. The piece should demonstrate advanced technical skill, complex form development, and creative surface decoration.
