The word philosophy comes from Greek, meaning “a love of wisdom.” Philosophers are concerned with thinking rigorously and rationally about ideas, and exploring their meaning, context, coherence and implications. In this subject, students will be introduced to the ideas surrounding the study of ethics, reason and epistemology (the theory of knowledge) and take a brief tour of some key Philosophers and their ideas.
We look at classic topics of philosophy such as theories of morality, what can be known, what makes something valuable, what is the best way to run a country, what is time, the qualities and existence of god.
Students will be challenged to apply philosophical reasoning to a number of interesting situations, concepts and ideas through a series of verbal and written activities and workshops, looking at current issues in the world.
Students investigate a philosopher and their ideas looking at the context in which they developed. They apply one of these theories to a modern problem.
Describe philosophical theories and provide reasons for and against them.
