The year 10 mathematics program at Footscray High School is designed to be a bridge that best supports students moving from the individualised pathways they experienced at the Junior campuses into the VCE Mathematics subjects.
The year 10 mathematics courses are structured to allow for students to work at the highest suitable level and to accommodate any necessary movement between levels. The diagram to the right shows the different courses available in year 10 and the most likely paths that students could take between them and VCE mathematics courses.
Note that year 10 students can only apply to study Mathematical Methods through the VCE application process that takes place at the end of term 2.
To complement the core studies, there are two elective subjects available:
Core and Elective Mathematics Subjects at FHS, showing available pathways for students from year 9 to year 12
In the VCE there are five different subjects. They are best thought of not in terms of difficulty, but in terms of abstraction. In increasing order of abstraction they are:
Vocational Major: Numeracy Units 1-4
Units 1-4 of Foundation Mathematics
Units 1-4 of General Mathematics
Units 1-4 of Mathematical Methods
Units 1-4 of Specialist Mathematics
